drive shaft

My next large undertaking will be converting my truck from a three speed to an automatic. I've assembled the cross member and other parts, including a decent steering column. Now I'm told (but not sure if its for certain) that the drive shaft is different between a three speed truck and an automatic truck.

Not being a transmission mechanic, I want to make sure before I begin pulling things off the truck. Can anyone enlighten me about this topic? Are the drive shaft lengths different for a three speed versus and automatic? And......what is there (if any) in difference between a drive shaft for a Turbo 350 and a Turbo 400 transmission? I believe the Turbo 350 and 400 transmissions are the same exact length (based on my hot rod experiences).

Re: drive shaft

i know the yoke will be different and you ll have to have one put on your driveshaft.
also the 350 trans came in a longtail and a short tail. i believe the 400 was a shorttail

Re: drive shaft

A 3-sp manual and a short TH350 are the same length. TH400 is different.

Re: drive shaft

First let me thank those that took the time to reply.... thank you!

I know from having a 1970 with a SB and a Turbo 400, that the extra gear is nice to have on the highway. That makes me want to lean towards the 400 over the 350. Having said that and taking into account the difference in drive shaft lengths, couldn't I take my two piece three speed drive shaft and have the front piece modified to fit the Turbo 400 requirements?

Any one on here that may be in Southern California area maybe selling a drive shaft from a parts truck or their old stock pile?

Re: drive shaft

You are not going to gain "an extra gear" by going with the th400. Still a 3 speed, just heavier duty
