Widening a Dana70 rear axle?

The PO of my 72 K2500 replaced the original Dana60 rear with a Dana70 (the truck spent most of its life hauling firewood).

The Dana70 came out of a dualie, and even with a spacer, the rear wheels aren't in line with the front wheels.

So, apart from finding an original Dana60 to put in her, what are my options? More spacers just seems wrong, and converting the truck to a dualie isn't an option (the truck barely fits through my garage door as it is).

So, narrowing a rear end for huge fat slicks is common, but I've never heard of anybody widening a rear end.

You might consider a 14 bolt ff swap. Takes only a little work to get it in there and it's obviously plenty stout and parts are readily available as well.

Re: Widening a Dana70 rear axle?

You can change hubs and get the correct wheel face point, the 70 should use the same hubs as a 14 bolt. BUT, the brake backing plate is then in the wrong spot. I don't think there are any bolt on disc options for the 70 and I know there aren't with SRW hubs, so you would have to do weld on caliper mounts.

But as mentioned above, swapping in a 14 bolt wouldn't be much trouble in the big scheme.
