Need a Spare Wheel for my Chevy Truck

I do not have a spare tire carrier under the rear of my truck .. I would like to carry a smaller wheel ,,that will fit my lugs ,,with a small size tire that I can lay in the bed.

One that would get me in to the station if need be ,,,or home where I can take the flat off and go get it fixed..

What do I have to pick from for me to go to a wrecking yard and pick up ,,maybe with a tire already on it?

What size tires are on the truck? Your spare should be about the same diameter.

90s caprice and impala have the 5x5 bolt pattern they may have a space saver spare. A lot of small import trucks have the same 6 lug bolt pattern.

Mike.. my tire size is P-235-70 R15 ,but I could get by with a undersized tire for a spare ,,as the odds of even needing a spare is about none,, and never far from home or ,now town as I live close in to town,

I was thinking about a small chevy truck or GMC canyon or the like with the bolt pattern and center the same.. any one know of any that will work?

A 16x4 (compact spare) from a gm full size car (1990 to 1996) that has the 5x5 bolt (5X 127mm) rims will work. If the truck has a posi rear it is best to keep the same size on the axle.

Re: Need a Spare Wheel for my Chevy Truck

Larry, I've never used one myself, so I looked at TireRack.com. Here's their take:

Compact Temporary Spares

Compact temporary spare tires are physically shorter and narrower than the vehicle's standard tires and wheels. Their smaller dimensions require they operate at higher inflation pressures than standard tires (typically 60 psi). Compact temporary spares also feature lighter-weight construction and a shallower tread depth than standard tires to reduce vehicle weight, as well as allow more trunk space to be dedicated to luggage. The compact temporary spare tire and wheel that comes with a vehicle is designed to fit that vehicle only. Never attempt to use a temporary spare and wheel on another vehicle unless it is the exact same make and model.

Re: Need a Spare Wheel for my Chevy Truck

I would think if the 1/2 ton is empty the car temp spare would be ok as the car and truck ar close to the same weights.

Re: Need a Spare Wheel for my Chevy Truck

Another option is to use a 215/75-15 tire. They run just a bit shorter that your 235/70s (27.7" vs 28").

Forgive me for asking, but why not just get a spare tire carrier and put the spare under the bed?

that wood b my choice// spare tire carriers are easy enough to fabricate out of scrap with a coplu lengths of threaded rod

still have the hole bed available to haul useless cool junk home and dont need to worry about somebody takin the easy to steal spare tire layin in the bed
