Engine year

Where is the number on the block that will tell me the year of the engine??

You can look up the suffix code on the front of the motor. Right side of the motor under the alternator. There will be a little pad right below the head.

If it is a V-8 there is a number on the front of the engine on a flat pad just below the passenger side head.

Then you can go to Mortec or other sites to decode it.

If you can't find a site, just post it here and some one will be happy to decode it for you.

i can see the pad but it is just blank.Could it have been scratched off?

It sounds to me like someone may have machined it off.

The only other place I know of is there are some numbers back by the distributor that can be used to determine what engine you have.

Thers was one by the oil filter too but that 1's not there.
Is it behinde the distributor?

This is information is listed at "mortec.com". "The block casting number on smallblock and big block Chevy V-8 motors is located on a ledge found at the rear of the block, most often on the driver's side. This ledge is below the deck of the block and the ledge forms the mating surface between the block and the transmission bellhousing."
