What power steering hoses are you using?

I have power steering from an ’88 GMC and trying to route the power steering lines. The modern lines have a hard line that curves forward and back. In the ’47 they won’t fit like that without cutting the inner fender. I need lines that go straight back. Do these hydraulic lines need to have some length of hard line? Why is there that much hard line?
I believe I need metric fittings. I found some universal hose kits, but they don’t specify fitting size.
I’m considering taking my hoses and have them modified, or make new ones to fit. Thought I’d ask here what you have done?
