nv4500 swap
Seems like a common question asked, but I'd prefer not to break the bank on this project. So I wanted to check with yall on my parts list and see if you guys could double check me. Swapping the old sm465 for the later model 1997 nv4500. The bellhousing off the 97 seems to match my engine block. I'll have to swap to internal slave... Long story short, wondering if my 86 clutch cylinder will power enough fluid for the 97 slave, I was told 454 flywheels are externally ballanced. Can I get by with the same 86 clutch or will a new 97 one match up? I'm just curious if anyone has done this just swapping parts and bellhousings. Not spending a grand at AA. Thanks for any input you guys can give me.

Leave the flywheel on the engine. The clutch may even be the same. The input spline on both the 465 and the 4500 are the same. The master should work just fine with the different slave cyl. If you want to be sure of the hydraulics, go to the parts store and check the difference on the piston size. The parts monkeys should have specs on them

hey thanks man, hopefully it will all piece together without much trouble then. i think thats the only questions i can think of that i haven't read yet. cant wait to hit that overdrive gear

the difference in the 96 and up chevy nv4500s. different bolt paterns, and internal slave.

I eventually plan on doing the same swap, finished a 5.3L swap last spring, and that SM465 is killing it. Do I want a 96 or newer? what is the difference, and how much longer is the NV4500 than the 465? Also, what kind of adapter would I have to get to use my 205 t-case?

If you have a machanical Speedo cable you want to get a tranny 95 and older the rest are electric and need about a 250 dollar adapter to make it work with your trucks gauges. The 4 bolt pattern should be the same. They switched those in the later 9 0s to match dodged nv4500. Idk about paying so much for a
dapters.. I took this tranny of a 97 when I have a 86... Lucky enough I nabbed the bellhousing so I'm hoping it'll all work out. They say ill probably have to cut the driveshaft... I would be interested on a quote to how much it would cost to cut a drive shaft threw a machine shop?? |

I don't know about 4 wheel drive swap. Just that the older nv45s were lower geared 1st threw 2 and that would be the one you need. The old sm's are suppose to rule the 4*4s
