63 Long Stepper c10 **BEWARE DIALUP USERS**

Well i'm new to the site, I'm Scott.. a 16 year old thats wanted to work on this truck since i was a kid.

Some History,
Truck was bought in 1980 from the original owner about 20 minutes from here. Its got a 292, 3 on the tree, Longbed Stepside Originally 507A [brigade blue]. The truck was used at that time for hauling stuff such as my grandpa's 39ft camper on a 2 hour trip at 65 I guess that means its a good hauler. When I decided to take on the project it was on its 2nd title holder but 5th "holder" . Original owner, grandpa, uncle, mom, dad and now me. Its got pretty bad rust on the rockers, in the gas tank and under the doors. Overall its a pretty good truck to start with. I've got the carb off and painted, waiting for me to put the rebuild kit in. I've got the collumn out, sanded primed, the shift levers welded and ground back flat.
I should be riding around by friday.

This first post will get the site up to speed with what i've done including pix so it'll be long BEWARE DIALUP USERS

-Walkaround vid

EDIT:

12/9/08
HE LIVES!

got it to run on gas poured in the carb... we were trying and trying.. couldnt get any spark..

and we were trying it and it just started sputtering.. and i was like.. holy crap.. is it doing that by it self..
12/16/08
heres some pix i drew .. i'm not an artist

in the purple cloth

the bottom one was under the other and sealed down on it..
the only thing that fits [chrome]

the dash reads 90 K.. and 93 K :whist:

and theres the fitment of the chome..its hard to put it on there and make it sit flat with nothing for it to sit on..

12/21/08
got that dash panel apart

hmm..how much do i want my truck to be worth? :whist:..

i did roll it back since it was the spare.. i got tired after moving 300 or so

Got it sanded.wire wheeled.. sanding is alot harder.. [craig, what kind of wire wheel do you use for stuff?] i used a bench grinder with wire wheels on it.. (we have 2 one with two grinding rocks and one with 2 wire wheels)

anywho..

tomorrow i plan to prime it after i go get some flat primer since all i have is metalic..then may lay some red metalcast

cant decide on red dash or black dash.. cuz i'ma opposite the glove box, ashtray, air controls and gauge panel frame then dash color the acutal bezel (probally)

its windy as crap here so i'm leavin them in the sun to dry..

i've got pix.. dont wanna resize them yet..

i sprayed metalic base on everything to keep it from rusting..

then i had to spray the back part in red.. haha.. it looks awesome but i didnt get all the black off and it showed through... so i sanded the black off [color sand correct term..idk all the sanding terms] and then laid a THICK coat of metalic base primer.. its got almost all of the red covered up.. theres one little wrinkle in it that i'm gunna sand out after it dries.. and then spray over that.. get a good red coat and clear it..

i've got the bolts silver base/red and it looks great.. everything else is silver [outer ring and backing]

i dont have any black except for mohawk's tone finish .. [wood paint i think]

so i'ma wait on that..

i sent a pic to my dad at work he's probally gunna be pissed cuz he said that " I told you "WE " could work on it ..not you half assin it" but idc.. its the spare.. i got it so i could experiment with it

12/23/08

the color sand the second time didnt work as well..thus the ripples.. i'll have to strip it buts my experiment dash so it dosent matter

i think were gunna go with the red trim.. maybe a black dash..

Got the Gas tank out to hear the sound of "sand" or rust.... and also got the carb off and the steering collumn out as well..

yall get this on paper cuz i will NEVER take out that column again by my self

Todays progress
1/1/09
Gas tank washed out and put rocks in it to get rust out and it didnt work so well ... still lots of rust.. found a small leak in the bottom too...
My uncle that owns the motorcylce shop [Mike] has a 64/65 ? panel truck like mine so i go to him for help on stuff and he said a few years ago he got a tank "vatted" at a radaitor shop and it was like 80 bucks.. a whole lot short than the 150 +20 ship for the gas tank from LMC but i'm not sure how current the prices are on that..

I also found out today its stuck in 2-N-3 not R-N-1 .. which therefore you must pull it to you to change the gears.. which its very hard.. i read online someone else had the same problem with their '65 and it was grease that hardened and packed all in it. the little nipples that engage the gears do need to be welded a little to help it change easier.. but anywho, i still have to get it apart unfortunately.. thus meaning :
Steering Wheel to be removed to get that done[ cant get it off... dont have a puller either]
once i'm inside;
cleaning and lubing of shifter mechanism
Replacing shifter bushings
replacing turn signal system [ dry-rotted]
lubing steering shaft
Sanding/painting column while i'm there..
New flex disc [maybe] on steering box

Todays Progress:
1/02/09
Got the carb apart and into 3 main pieces and then the little parts.. I've gotta go to pick up my ordered re-build kit tomorrow morning from NAPA and get that back together tomorrow if i can get the rest of the gunk clean out of the bowl and the outside pretty clean. Were looking to spray it a metalic bronze
Also got the collumn apart today. LOTS of pieces... I hope we can get it back right but anywho, i've got all the metal wire-wheeled and to be primed tomorrow and painted gloss black. I'm also going to paint the trim ring for the gauge panel too. Only thing I havent messed with yet is the shifter lever. I'm probally going to wire wheel that and paint it chrome. Next part on the list is to buy the turn signal repair kit. The "tits" for the shifting mechanism are worn about halfway down from where we suspect it should be.The bottom lever is bent in a little so it'll have to be bent back and as soon as we can get it welded and the turnsignal back in it'll be ready to go back in. I'm still un-sure if were going to replace the flex disc for the steering box.

I forgot to mention in my other post, I broke the brakeline from the mas. cyl to the splitter for the front but luckily its only 2 foot long and the brake shop in town told me to bring it in, and they can probally re-flange it or they can custom make some brake line there

1/5/08
Today I painted the collumn metal parts black. I cleared the floor plate but it looks really bad so I may not clear the rest of the parts
Heres what it looked like assembled and in the truck

and heres the current pix

As of 1/8/08
I'm still working on getting the carb cleaned, my uncle has a parts washer i may go ask him if i can put it in there tomorrow afternoon for a little while.. its way cleaner than what i started with by far. but were planning on painting it rustoleum metalic bronze... and for the primer and paint to stick then its gotta be CLEAN.. and its hard to get it really clean with just a brush and a can of carb cleaner.. and you cant soak anything in carb cleaner cuz it evaporates... so in the parts washer i'll be able to dab the brush in small places.. my uncle said if you soak it in tidy bowl for like 45 minutes it'lll get it clean but if you forget it for too long then it'll eat the carb to dust so i dont want to go that route. if not i'll still clean a little bit more then get it really clean, and get to painting

Does anyone have any tips on painting a carb?

I was thinking to put the 3 main pieces togeather and cover the top and bottom and spray it like that.. and put any screws and crap in the sides thats supposed to be there.

I'm ready to get this thing running!

1/9/08

I've painted the silver[primer] gauge panel bezel black today. I also took the old panel loose thats in the truck and i put my new face up behind the glass, the electric gauges are custom fit into the gauge panel so i'll have to cut the panel that i have for the gauges to fit, or just take the gauges out , sand and paint that one. The glass in the truck looks GREAT compared to the dirty one i have, plus mines broken. i spit on the one in there and wiped it off with my jacket sleeve and its pretty clean. I've still got a couple coats then clear on the gauge bezel but the last thing i cleared black it didnt look too good. I'm pretty satisfied with how clean I got the carb so I may paint it over the next few days. The collum's still in the state it was on the last post.

I'm gunna call my grandpa thats got the title and see how long it'd take him before he could get to it, i may see if he can weld it up. If it'll be a while, then i'll just go to the welding shop down the road... hes pretty pricey, but hes done 3 just like it according to my uncle...

1/10/09
Today I took the collumn over to my grandpas and got him to weld it [moms dad] and grind it .. looks GREAT!.. my dad went to town to get some hi-gloss krylon to finish the collum with and its going back in the truck tomorrow or monday after school.
The carb got painted today and its going togeather tomorrow and on the truck right after or monday..
The brake line that i broke off , has to be re-flanged.. and i was showing my collumn to my uncle thats been my leading advice in the project, and he said to bring the brake line up there and he'd re-flange it for me..
So i'll be ridin round monday or tuesday WAHOO

Re: 63 Long Stepper c10 **BEWARE DIALUP USERS**

1/10/08 CONT.
And heres my painted cluster

My carb, all painted

And air cleaner all primed up. I've yet to strip the bottom half of the air cleaner.

my dad did this portion of the painting while i was shooting skeet so idk what his plans are for it.
The only thing i have done thats not pictured, is the bezel for the whole gauge cluster unit is now black

-update on the air cleaner top, its plainted gloss black. we have to get some engine degreaser to get the oil out of the bottom of the air cleaner top to get it sanded.

sorry for the long posts guys,

So, what do ya think, anyone have any tips for the project?

Re: 63 Long Stepper c10 **BEWARE DIALUP USERS**

Hey Scott, welcome to the site....long steppers rock! I too have a 63 long/step, originally with a 292 and 3 on the tree (changed to a 327/TH350 in 1989) that I've had since I was just about your age. It was my dad's truck before that and he taught me to drive in it. The three on the tree was fun and I kind of miss it but I don't miss it randomly getting stuck in gear at intersections! I drove it all through college and to work every day until 2001. Started tearing her down to the frame about three years ago and now she's going back together. Progress so far: frame and suspension bits powder coated, rear axle rebuilt, rear suspension assembled, front suspension assembly in progress. I'm 41 now so it's good to see you getting such a young start! Good luck and enjoy! Don't hesitate to ask questions here.

Mike

Nope, no build thread. And no 292/3 spd parts either. I did the swap in 1989 and all that stuff is long gone!

Fat lot of help I am, huh?
