This Is Why You Check The Tank Out

-
I decided to remove the tank from the '68 I just bought and flush it out before putting fresh gas in it. Glad I did....

If you buy a truck that has been sitting for quite a while you really need to check the inside of the fuel tank before trying to start it. The tank I took out has about 10 pounds of junk in it. When you tip the tank from end to end all of the stuff inside goes "Thud" to the other end.... This is the worst I have ever seen. Luckily, I had a good tank to put in it.

Re: This Is Why You Check The Tank Out

I just replaced my tank and sending unit 'cuz mine looked exactly like that. Worst smelling fuel I've ever smelled. Not too mention all the rust and other particulate that came out. It was so bad the junk actually plugged up my funnel when I was dumping it out into gas cans to take to the dump.

I think I am going to cut the tank open to see what's inside. My curiosity is getting the best of me.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that! Use to be able to tell just by looking at the inside of the oil fill cap.

Not to derail... but I have tore down engines run on Pennzoil... they never, ever, looked like that. Havoline oil is the worst...

Leon, that is nasty! If you ever need a good tank in the future, I have a nice freshly cleaned one from my Longhorn I will not be using.

Nope, I just flush 'em and blow 'em out with high pressure air.

Tanks Ryan.... I will keep that in mind. Hopefully I won't need any for a couple of years anyway.

Yep, torch. No problem if you know what you are doing. I have cut a few and soldered a few with a torch.

Re: This Is Why You Check The Tank Out

As I was looking at the pictures, all I kept thinking about was what would have happened if you had just poured some fresh gas in the tank and tried to run it as is? Good thing you have the common sense to check it first. I also would be interested in seeing the inside of the tank when you open it up. I'm curious about the part that went "clunck." LOL

Anyways good luck and your new ride looks to be a pretty sweet one. I wonder how long it had been setting before you got it. Have you figured out a reason the previous owner gave up on it?
