Re: Antique plates
The amount you can drive with them. I'd look for some '68 plates and try to run those, instead. I run '72 plates and can drive as much as I want.

Re: Antique plates
Pros: No yearly inspection, emissions, or registration in PA, cheaper insurance
Cons: Your suppose to limit your driving, no hauling or towing, Suppose to be stock truck with no alterations. This may differ between states, I'm not sure. Also others may debate what I stated. I put antique plates on my truck to avoid the yearly inspections and registration fees.

Re: Antique plates
In NY we can't run the old plates unless it's registered "Historical", then they severely limit mileage and no towing or hauling anything at any time. I found really nice '71 plates for my truck then called the DMV just to get disappointed.

I have '68 plates (Year of manufacture) on my '68 GMC here in Michigan. One time fee ($35.00) I am pretty sure and no limitations.

Michigan also allows you to register your antique vehicle with a same-year general use Michigan license plate. The plate must be authentic and feature the correct colors for the plate year. To register, you must submit: A completed http://www.michigan.gov/documents/hp...pdfApplication and Certification (Form BDVR-96) Proof of ownership, such as a copy of your title. A color photocopy, scan or photograph of the plate you intend to use. Do not send the actual plate. Proof of Michigan no-fault insurance. A check for $35. Authentic plates cannot be registered in person. Mail is your only option. Send to the address specified on the application form. |

Re: Antique plates
Here in Illinois antique plates limit you to shows, parades & to the repair shop but extended antique plates only limit you from November to March(winter)

Re: Antique plates
I put regular plates on my 69... More expensive but full coverage insurance was lower because it wasn't registered as an antique, Rookie cops don't mess with you (I'm an old cop) and less paperwork.

Re: Antique plates
I run '71 YOM (year of mfg.) plates on my 4x4. Thought about antique plates and decided against it as found a really nice '71 local county farm plate with the 8M sticker like they used to use years ago. 8M being 1/2 ton and 12M being 3/4 ton. My insurance company really doesn't have any mileage restriction other than "not an every day driver". I'm okay with that since I usually get it out every couple days when the weather is good. Stays nice and toasty in the ship during the wet, snowy, nasty months unless needed. Insured for an agreed value after a professional appraisal of $14,000 just this last year. May or may not be worth that or maybe worth more $$ wise but worth every bit of it to me when I am at a gas station and am asked "Hey, your truck for sale"? "Thanks for asking but NOPE, NOT FOR SALE"!
Get the same question for my running current project, '71 Chevelle. '71 YOM plates and NOT FOR SALE either.

Re: Antique plates
Idaho is 3 years for 30 bucks, no tags--- restrictions for club meetings, parades, test drives, so I installed a new mirror and took a test drive...HA

Re: Antique plates
Iowa here- No more antique plates. You can run YOM plates, but you have to have special permission from the DOT (read as extra hoops to jump through). You must carry your current plates and tags with you in the vehicle and present them to an officer upon their request. Bruce

Re: Antique plates
Thanks guys.
I'm just going to go with a regular plate. I thought the antique plates were kinda cool, but it's my truck, and I don't need any more government or insurance agrivation in my life. LOL |

Re: Antique plates
The limitations are the same whether you run The DMV issued historic plates or year of manufacturer plates. The only vehicle you can run year of manufacture plates on are vehicles registered as historic. It's the same registration status. The year of manufacture plate with get noticed quicker by L.E.O. and more likely to have limits enforced. Here in MD we are required to carry the historic plates in the vehicle while displaying year of manufacture plates. I don't see the limitations on historic registered vehicles enforced by the police here. The only limitation I'm concerned with is insurance. One disadvantage I see to running year of manufacture plates is they grab attention and give L.E.O.s a reason to stop and check you out. Maybe not on a Sunday afternoon, but if you're running around it's something to think about
