Broken Flexplate

Well I had been hearing this tapping sound in my 68 K20 for a few days, then it started knocking and that went from knocking to hammering. I thought for sure that the bottom end was going south. So I removed the inspection cover and look what I found.

Any thoughts on what the easiest method to replace the fledxpate would be? e.g. removing tranny and xfer, or pulling engine?

Thanks.

Re: Broken Flexplate

if it was me i'd drop the trans with crossmember and the transfer case and you can get right to it, might think about buyin a heavy duty flexplate too so it doesn't happen again, i had an el camino that busted them like crazy, and its not all that fun of a job especially in a 4x4, on 2wd vehicles i never drop the trans completely i just schoot it back enough to pust the convertor in and take it off with an end wrench you don't need all that much room, well hope i've been helpful for ya

Exactly what happened to me several years ago, and I thought exactly the same thing.

A semi-retired mechanic pulled the t-case and the trans to replace the flexplate. Worked his @$$ off and felt bad about the number of hours, and gave me a break on the cost -- then said he hoped he never had to do another one!

Re: Broken Flexplate

Pull the fan off the front, take the eng mounts loose, exhaust, ect....leave the /transfer case in place, just slide the eng ahead. you wont need to pull it, but i have done it both ways , & IMO its easier sliding the eng foward... L

That is exactly what I was thinking, I was just curious if someone else had done it that way.
