Casting #`s

I have a 1972 C/10 with 402 big block. The Vin# is CCE142S172244. The casting number or the number I found stamped on a machined surface on the front passenger side of the block is T0310TLM. Is there any way for me to tell from these numbers if this is the origional 402. The sticker in the glove box says 400. Any help on either of these numbers will be greatly appreciated. I am taking the truck to an auto show in the morning and would like to be able to tell what I have. THanks, Joe Watson

block suffix code reads:

L47 is the code that GM used to identify the motor that is in the truck. It should appear next to the engine option where it appears on the sticker on the glove box door.

T0310TLM T=Tonawanda Plant 03= month built (March) 10=day built TLM=8cly, 400cid, 210 hp, 8.5:1 comp ratio, 4BC carb, TH Trans. TLM on your block shows it is for a 72 chevy truck. If your engine appears stock with all the original equipment and is equiped with a 400 trans it most likely is. B.B.

You can't be 100% sure since VINs were not stamped on truck engines until '73. It is VERY likely that it is the original engine though as long as you have the L47 listed on your glove box sticker.

My L 47 396 is fairly stock and hauls ass! ..soon..It might help too that truck took an 800 lb diet.. about that engine I like it ..its internally ballanced so be for worned its expensive to rebuil one ,,this one has 40 thou. on it and feels barely broken in ..it got bored 20 over high nines compression re curved again...distributor . hyd lifters oval port truck heads built for unleaded .mild RV crane cam edl intake 750 carb im trying soon I always ran a little 600cfm for economy..the truck is very quick and can still tow a big trailer 3 times as heavy as it is . then trailer drives truck not you.. just cause its a 2 bolt truck block dont let that fool you the bottom end can handle lots..just remember it was the one of the first crate bigblocks ! always an niceoption and a hell of a short cut if you cant be happy with 400 to 600 horses without juice
