Does anyone have an opinion on chrome diff. covers? Are they known to leak or anythig like that?

Yes they leak. But someone said it's just the cheapo ones that leak (china). So get a good one if you must.
The saving grace about the diff cover is that the oil is allot heavier that engine oil, so won’t be as bad.

Ive used a few....and a few of the chrome tranny pans aswell. All I can say is they are thin, flimsy, cheaply made, and the chrome starts to peel if it gets too hot.

I personally dont recommend them.

I personally think they are cheesey.A good painted black diff cover is what you need.Not China Chrome.Just something else to rust.I really dont understand the concept of chrome oil pans and chrome tranny pans either.Your not going to see them under there and they just get rusty.You really cant see them anyway unless you have a lifted truck,and then we have more important things to worry about than

i think they're stupid. you see people in the new trucks with chrome door handles, mirror covers, diff covers, tailgate handles. chrome in the wrong place just looks out of place and stupid. if you look under there and that's the only chrome piece you see, that's stupid in my opinion

They are known to get rusty, pitted, and just generally sh!tty looking over time. Not to mention whenever I see one, I laugh and point. No one seems to understand my humor, though.

Chrome diff covers look cheesy and they serve no purpose. However, if you wanted something down there to look good and be useful you might think about the aluminum support covers. Some come with the brackets that will help to strengthen your rear end (OK your truck’s rear).

They were on the`71 Blazer I had.No problems,but I took them off to put Larger capacity finned aluminum ones on.A year later the chrome ones rusted sitting inside a parts Blazer that was fully closed up.I like black with stainless bolts.Or,you could get those acorn caps if you want bling.
I`d think those clear ones would just get ransid gear oil shloshed all over them,get stained all brownish,and be subject to breakage.Who needs that?

if a person does use a chrome diff cover it is a good idea the sand the chrome off the gasket surface so that it will seal , if u don't its basicly like trying to seal sumthing to glass i thought about the clear one too but i figure they would get dirty or break like special-k said

Take your original one in or one from a boneyard. Find one clean with no pits or heavy rust. Then send it in for chrome plating with the bolts. Then you get a good quality chrome cover that seals.

We sell everything from the ones we are discussing to some pretty high dollar ones. We sell the same things as Jegs and Summit for the most part. I have the cheap chrome one on my 65 and it rusts and leaks just like they did 35 years ago. Of course most all of my rears leaked even with stock covers if you abused them like we did

I love my chrome diff cover ... especially after I sandblasted it and painted it black.

The only reason my truck has a chrome one on it is the origial one had a huge silcone glob to keep it from leaking through the hole that was in the cover. I just hapened to have a chrome one at the parts store I worked at so I bought it and put it on. I just never have changed it out.

Well, I didn't mean to insinuate those with chrome diff covers are douchebags, per se.

Do you have road salt there in Colorado? Every "rust scale over chrome" diff cover I see here has seen winter road time. Oh, the joys of salt.

EDIT: I am making my own diff covers, so I'm sure there are people who think they are ugly as hell. Using (forget what size) sewer pipe endcap for my rear...gonna weld that one to the housing, already drilled and tapped a fill hole and got a plug for it. Working on designing my own diff cover for the front axle using some 3/16" and 1/4" plate that I got from work. I'll paint em black, but they'll rust in less than a year anyway. Ugly? Of course. Functional? Of course.
