opinion's on....

....frame-mounted battery drop-down box,like those listed on e-bay? anybody used/mounted one? worth the while.....or just a cool gimmick? i like the advantages of being able to glue down the interior carpet/sound padding and not have to make cuts in the new carpet for the battery access door....thoughts,opinions ....hell, everybody has an opinion,eh? ha ha!

I have not seen one but I built my own frame mounted box under the bed for the same reason. To keep from pulling up the carpet. I like the idea of "drop down" but I am thinking of cutting a door in the bed for access.

thanks for the replies guys!.....don't care too much for the idea of cutting on my nice wood bed though,....good idea though to hang one futher down the chassis.don, you said that it was necessary to remove the running board to remove the battery.....? is this w/ a drop-down box? or is this w/ the old one and having blocked access to the floor door and having to go below to remove the battery?

hey alan good to hear from ya again....did you just leave the corner of the carpet.....(if that's what you have) unglued? i would like to sound proof and insulate the floors when i get to the interior....insulation made a WORLD of a difference in my resto(rod) '68 1/2 ton. so i would really like to do this also w/ the '49. i'm prolly gonna go w/ a sill plate at the threshold, to hold the edges down,so it'll kinda be a p.i.t.a. if i ever need to access the battery through the floor. know what i mean?.....thanks for the input, and keep the projects posted on the web-page they've really been helpful to see how other guy's do it..

What you see in the pic above is just the jute (under the carpet insulation) glued down to the floor -- no carpet YET.

I neatly glued the jute to the floor and to the door/cover that goes over the battery compartment. Then, there's a second layer of the same stuff with a "flap" cut over the door/cover (NOT glued) ... you can see more Here

I'll do the same "flap-over-door" routine when I lay carpet over the jute and I'll probably sew a leather/vinyl trim piece around the three sides of the flap, attaching the carpet and jute together so it's an "easy-open" to the battery-door.

I plan on installing, like you do, a sill-plate to dress up the carpet at the door-area and to hold everything secure.

Finally, with a mud carpet on top of everything, you don't even see the battery door or flap in the carpet, etc. ... so, it looks as nice as not having it. And, like I said, it the easiest access to the battery, so I'm in favor of it.

That's kinda cool. I haven't decided what I'm going to do yet. I was worried about having a good looking with the carpet if I had to lift it for the battery access. I figured a mat would cover the cut carpet.
