Final verdict on electric fans?

Hey all,
I have read all the different threads I have found on electric fans with stock 4 core radiators. I've seen to use the Taurus fans, maxima fans,windstar fans, jeep Cherokee fan, even the HHR fan. My question is this: which one of these has actually been used successfully for any length of time. This will be used with a 6.2 ls motor, so not sure if it needs more cooling or not. I have the stock dual electric fans from the donor vehicle, but it will take some work to make it fit. I'm looking for easier but not crazy expensive. Also, can I go with new aftermarket fans? Are they reliable? They are only about 80.00 on eBay for dorman fans. Thanks for the input all!

another option....and made for our trucks. I have a 4 core radiator on my 6.0 fitted with a Old Air Products dual electric fan system for our radiators. Came with relays and all, including thermostatic control and radiator probe to run w/o ECM control but can also can be controlled by an ECM. Can't remember the cost...seems I bought thru ECE or Brothers or similar? Mounts up like it should too.

I looked at that one. Just a little pricier than I really want to spend on a set of fans. Very nice, but a little expensive.

I would go with a factory fan like the Taurus or Windstar, they are usually bulkier but pull more air than the cheaper aftermarket fans. In a truck space isn't at a premium they work well and are quieter. I can't stand the sound of a loud fan that makes your car sound like a jet taxiing down the runway! The higher quality fans arent as loud, so you get what you pay for. Ive seen some real nice street rods that look good then you see them driving with that noise, just ruins it for me.

It's not in a 67-72 truck, but on a past swap project I used dual fans from a Dodge Intrepid.

I TIG welded bosses to the radiator tanks so that the Intrepid fan was able to bolt up to it. Been running for a year now, most of it in the Texas heat...zero problems.

I used fans off of a 2001 LS1 Firebird... That fit well, and have a lot of air flow.

I would consider looking for a used or ebay/craigslisted aftermarket unit, especially if you are not running air conditioning.

Reason I say this, many of the better quality aftermarket units flow more air on a single fan, and without the a/c on many of the twin fan setups only run 1 fan at a time (I'm sure many of you bypassed this). Aside from that, a larger single fan from a good company may draw less amperage; due to a better quality motor/bearings/blade design. Thats my 2 cents, my be-cool fan and radiator have been through a 355 and now my 6L flawlessly.

Thanks for the input guys. The ls1 fan looks pretty good. That's very interesting about the aftermarket fans. I think I would like to run dual fans since I'll be running oth the front and rear AC in the big ok burb.

I live in the Mojave desert and run windstar fans, with just one running it kept my truck at temp idling on a trail in 110 degree weather. They pull some air.

I'm really leaning towards the windstar fans. What year did you use? I was looking at the 99-03 or the 95-98? They look the same. Is there a difference or a preference between the two?

I don't know if there is a difference, but I'm pretty sure they are from a 98, I got them used at the wrecking yard.

MoTech that does 6.2L swaps into Jeep JKs, swears by the Lincoln Mark VII fan... They run a custom aluminum radiator that has to be small to fit the Jeep and they all run the factory AC as well. The Lincoln fan is a true 2 speed fan with a dual wound motor, where other 2 spped fans use a resistor to cut down the voltage for low and full voltage for high.

I found a dual speed Grand Cherokee fan that will fit in the our factory fan shroud. I hope it works well. I bought it new on eBay for $100.

Fan shrouds are almost as important as the fan itself. If your shroud doesnt direct all the air throught the radiator, you are reducing the effectiveness of fan.

That was the other fan I couldn't remember. The Lincoln Mark VIi fan. I wanted to do the Cherokee fan as it would seem to be the easiest install of all, but my understanding is that it doesn't fit in the big block shroud correctly. I don't know, maybe I should just get a sbc shroud. That is of course more money and more work. Wasn't there a particular year (1 year only) Cherokee that had a two speed single fan? I think I remember 1995 or something?

That was the 2004 Grand Cherokee fan with towing package.. I bought the aftermarket replacement version. I believe its true dual wound motor... time will tell as I gave it to MoTech to test with the harness they're building for me... Actually its a Howell EFI harness that he's tweaking for my application.

I THINK this is the fan... but dont quote me on it as I dont have the original in front of me...

Jumping in a little later but I have been studying this issue. Started by looking for an American made radiator. Not so easy to find. Griffin is one and there are others....
So, regarding fans you should check out Hollister Road website. They sell relays and have worked with several types of fans. Even have nice write up on running aftermarket fan in 67-72 Chevy. Spoke with Dave, very friendly and helpful man. Recommended I get TYC PN 620950 from RockAuto. This is a 2 speed 94 Tbird fan for $63.79 brand new. If a plug is needed Hollister sells one for $20 and the fan relay kits range from $60 - 70. In my case the PCM from the LQ9 should control the speed.
Some modification is required (trimming shroud) to clear front of motor.

i like a dual fan set up and if you wire it like a stock Fbody LS1 then both fans work and give you a low and high fan speed. years ago i had a set of fans that only had the high speed and it really whined loudly all the time.

ls1nova71 (i think) has a thread somewhere on here that has the wiring schematics
