Hello! C10 wont start.. I need your help!
Let me begin by saying Hello and thank you. I've always wanted a c10 and after years of waiting and the wife being okay with it I picked up a 70 C10.
Car was running fine, engine turned on at the turn of the key and worked. The interior was a mess so my first step was cleaning it up. Essentially new carpet, seat covers, etc. etc. The previous owner had connected the 3 gauge unit "amp" "oil temp" "pressure" and I changed those out and also changed out the ignition with a new key. I tried to turn it on today and the car does not do anything. No crank, no noise, nothing. I disconnected the battery when I was doing all this and the battery seems to be fine. I ve been reading other threads and hoping to get some guidance, looking at wiring diagrams , and just cant figure out what I did. Any insight would be greatly welcomed =) Thanks! |

Maybe the neutral safety switch?
Hopefully someone will correct me if that wouldn't explain your symptoms cause actually its only a guess.. Here is a link to what one board member wrote.. (with photo of the switch on a tilt column - if yours is non tilt it will look similar) http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=279081 |

Maybe the fusible link has blown
From the factory there are two wires coming off of your positive battery terminal (sometimes there are more added by the PO or you), one is a large cable that goes directly to your starter, and the other is your fusible link, think of it as sort of a main breaker (or fuse) for your trucks electrical system

Is the "3 gauge unit" you described a small panel of 3 gauges mounted under the dash? If so... they aren't factory. They were installed by the PO and who knows how well they were installed. Gary

Break out the multimeter, check the battery voltage first. Looking at a battery can't tell you if it's "fine". You should have close the 13 volts without a load. If you have power then check the fusible link that the others have mentioned. It's on the fender next to the battery. Check for power going to it, then power coming out of it. If your headlights don't work it's more then likely one of these two items.

Yes they are a sun pro pack of 3 gauges.. Also, there is no wire coming from the positive terminal aside from the main. It looks like the PO removed the fusible link. The only small wire goes into the volt gauge that were installed.

Re: Hello! C10 wont start.. I need your help!
That "Junction block" connection seems to be a recurring problem with these trucks, double check the red fusible link (wire) coming from the battery positive cable to the junction block (small black triangle/insulated block on the fender, next to the battery tray) and make sure the terminal isn't corroded, and/or broken inside the insulator.
take a test light and probe the insulation to see if there is battery voltage available. You said something about a new key, did you replace the whole switch or just the key? The connector on the back of the switch can be hard to connect, look at that too.... Hth, Ben Smith |

I just replaced the key. Didn't want someone else starting it up... Haha!

Re: Hello! C10 wont start.. I need your help!
Did it start after you finished working on it?
Have you hooked up a battery charger or jumper cables? Check to make sure the the other ends of the battery cables did not come out of their connectors. You changed the key but not the switch? I don't know what good that would do. Oh well, check the connector on the ignition switch. is it plugged in all the way? Did any of the wires push out? Do you have an alarm system? No hidden toggle switches?
