Crazy thought

Thinking of swapping the 305 for a 454 and putting a muncie 4 speed behind it. Has anybody ever replaced an automatic with a standard before? Wondering about a clutch pedal and linkage.

Re: Crazy thought

Doing the swap right now. Here is a basic parts list.

1. Bell Housing (Either a mechanical Linkage, Or Hydraulic)
2. Flywheel (And the proper bolts, they are longer then flex plate bolts!)
3. Clutch Disc (Either a 11" or 12" will work, but you need the matching pressure plate)
4. Pressure Plate (And the mounting bolts)
5. Throwout Bearing
6. Pilot bushing (you can get either a bushing, or bearing. I prefer bushings)
7. Transmission (And the four bolts that attach it to the bell housing)
8. Crossmember (And the bushings the go between it and the transmission)
9. Transfer Case (If 4WD...)
10. Drive Shaft (Proper type, and length)
11. Shift Boot
12. Clutch fork dust boot
13. Dust Shield

Next you need to decide what kind of clutch you want. You can get two main types. Hydraulic, and mechanical linkage. To do the hydro swap, see the thread linked below where Larry does it.

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=431033

To do a mechanical linkage you need a few parts.

1. Pedal "tunnel"
2. Pedals (A small brake pedal, and a mechanical linkage clutch pedal)
3. Few random springs
4. Pedal-to-Bell Crank Rod
5. Dust boot for #4
6. Bell crank
7. Bell crank Bracket (It is riveted to the frame from the factory...)
8. Bell crank-to-clutch fork rod

Some of the parts can be had through here.

Re: Crazy thought

I have done the swap, it went well, really like it over the auto. I just have issues with the mechanical linkage clearing headers, but I will tackle that when I put my 454 in.

Re: Crazy thought

Sweet! Think I'll go with the hydraulic clutch.
