Project 67 DRGNWGN - 67 Burban!!

Well, i been teetering around the forum since march 09 when i got this beast. Found it on craigslist in dallas, called up the dude who was asking $800, talked him down to $600 over the phone. That weekend i picked up a trailer with my 02 Tahoe and made the 4 and a half hour trip up to dallas (I'll never do that by myself again, lol). Was kinda cold, had been raining, and was probably the worst weekend to go lol. Anywho, i tried to get him down to 500 since it had a horrible dent in the 4th door area, but he wouldnt budge. We winched it on the trailer, i stopped at McDonald's, filled up, and headed back to Houston (area). And this is when it started raining again, so going max 55mph (trailer started swaying all over the freeway at anything faster) in the rain it took me a little over 6 and a half hours to get back. And this is what it looked like the day i got it...

[IMG][/IMG]

[IMG][/IMG]

[IMG][/IMG]

First thing i started to do was repair the rear driver side quarter, so i bought a rear driver side long bed quarter. It fit ok, but it didnt come with the wheel arch indention, so i replaced it anyways and i have to go back later and make an indention...heres some before pics,
[IMG][/IMG]
[IMG][/IMG]
[IMG][/IMG]
[IMG][/IMG]

and heres after..i also had to cut a section out right behind the new piece towards the bumper. i just some spare metal i had and shaped it in. since this pic i laid a little glass over the weld line, then some filler to smooth it out. ill snap some more in once i get the wheel arch added to the new piece.
[IMG][/IMG]
like i said, i still have to come back and finish it up, so dont flame me yet!!

next up was the 4th door area...and heres a pic of this one.
[IMG][/IMG]
and goodbye!

Re: Project 67 DRGNWGN - 67 Burban!!

heres the new piece(s) welded up. i cut this off of a long bed parts truck. it didnt fit completely, so i made another piece to weld in right above it.
[IMG][/IMG]
[IMG][/IMG]
[IMG][/IMG]

i still need to finish this up as well..after these pics i grinded off all the bondo that was on there before, banged out some metal to make it somewhat straight. then i laid some glass over the welds, sanded it down, then laid some bondo to smooth it out. im still in the process of making it even, so ill get some pics up once i start on that.

Next up was to start on the front end until i get back to the previous jobs i started..lol
i started by sanded everything down with a da sander with 80 grit, but the hood had some small rust pits. i used a wire wheel on the whole hood, then sprayed some rust converter on it to make sure. i pretty much did this to the entire front end..da with 80 grit then wire wheel, rust converter, then black primer!

before...
[IMG][/IMG]
during..
[IMG][/IMG]
[IMG][/IMG]

didnt snap any pics of the driver fender, i just sanded it all down, fixed some minor dings and one dent, the primered it. the passenger fender on the other hand had a big nasty dent in it.

[IMG][/IMG]
[IMG][/IMG]
in the last pic you can see some of the work that was done to the driver fender...
heres the rusty cup..

Re: Project 67 DRGNWGN - 67 Burban!!

so i ordered a replacement cup from Brother's, and i found a good deal on craigslist on a whole front clip from a 67. that fender was good, but it also had a rusted cup, rust on the wheel arch, and a little in the back bottom. i figured it would be better to cut the front off the fender i had, and weld in the front of the fender i just picked up. heres some progress of this long journey of making a good original fender out of 2 lol

Here it is all welded up, with the new cup on and ready for some duraglass and filler.

[IMG][/IMG]

after some body work..getting ready for primer.

wait..another *%$#%&* rust spot, so i cut it out, welded in a new piece, then laid some filler..

Re: Project 67 DRGNWGN - 67 Burban!!

while all that was off i went ahead and wire wheeled the core support and fixed a rust spot..also did the hood latch.

and here is everything back together, with primered light buckets, got my headlights back in, and got my emblems powdercoated black in the middle..

was planning on primering all my doors today, but i found some rust one a door, and a rocker. so i just did one door today while i wait on the new metal. guess ill be back to work on the driverside untill i get my stuff in.

and thats it for now..slow progress but its coming along!

Great project. Why is it always the passenger fender? Both of mine had big dents in the passenger side. Keep working hard on that 'burb.

Re: Project 67 DRGNWGN - 67 Burban!!

lol, i know what your saying, i see a lot of people needing the passenger side. i hope this thing gets rolling faster, i feel like nothing has been done even though i put a lot of work in it. i think once i start on the suspension i can see it coming along.

Nice burb, and nice work, you make me feel ashamed, my sub needs a lot less work and it just sits begging for attention By the way, do you have any interior pics? Welcome to the Burb family

Do you have any plans for the suspension or wheels in the future? Maybe airbags?

definitely bags, im getting the kit together right now actually. its next on my to do list...I already have all 4 bags, airline, pressure switch, and all 8 valves. I got an edc that I won't put in until beginning of next year, but I have a viair 400 on the way for temporary. so I still need drop spindles, drop blocks, monster notch, fittings, switchbox, tank, and gauges. man that list seems like it just got longer...lol. and sometime next year maybe, some black 22's. but we will see, I still need a motor and transmission lol

Are you building the monster notch yourself when the time comes? Or are you buying one? Are you Z ing the front to drop it in the weeds?

Re: Project 67 DRGNWGN - 67 Burban!!

def buying one, I wish I could make one. im gonna have a buddy weld it in for me, he's a certified welder at a body shop. as for the front, so far its gonna be drop spindles and recessed cups in my lca's. but if I do come across a good deal on somebody z'ing my frame for cheap, then I will do that too. its in the plans, but not a priority for now.

Re: Project 67 DRGNWGN - 67 Burban!!

well its been a couple of weeks since any posting but i did get some work done. i got the front 2 pillars in primer, along with the area around the front window. i seen a lot of surface rust but good thing there was no rust pits or anything, but i still sprayed some rust converter over it anyways, then primer. i also got the front bagged, without drop spindles and cupped lca's. heres some pics of that..

everything taken apart..

bumpstop cut off..

pic of the bag bolted to the cup and plate

and now the plate bolted in

fully compressed (driver side)

aired up

aired down..

still need to get the spindles and get bigger recessed cups for the lca's, so that will get me close to another 5" lower i think. but i went ahead and started on the rear yesterday. started raining so i couldnt finish it, so im gonna try to get my airline fitting hole drilled today and bolt the passenger side up and hopefully get some pics.

Re: Project 67 DRGNWGN - 67 Burban!!

oh, i did want to add something. when i was looking through other threads to get an idea of what im getting into, i didnt see any info on what size the nuts were on everything being taken off, so i thought i would share. the shock nut and tie rod nut is 19mm, the top spindle nut is a 22mm, and the bottom spindle nut is a 27mm (at least this is what i used lol). i may have to double check this since i didnt write them down lol

lol, ya i know. once i get the spindles and cup the lca's im gonna see how low that will be. i want it proportional to the rear since the rear is only going to be bag on trailing bar with 2" blocks (maybe 3" blocks) and a monster notch. hopefully that sits pretty low to my liking. seems the only thing ill be dragging right now is my busted up exhaust lol

Re: Project 67 DRGNWGN - 67 Burban!!

If you are just doing the blocks and bags in the back, just do spindles in the front. No need to cup the LCA's. Also, if you're running inner fenders in the front you won't go any lower with cupped LCA's if you have 3" spindles. The one advantage the cupped LCA's would give you is more air in the bag when driving at ride height which is a good thing. Just depends on if you're going to pull the LCA off anyways or not whether it's worth it.
