Speedo cable question

After installing my Autometer speedo, my cable ended up being about 2-3 inches too short when I tried to connect it to the transmission. I know I already have the longest cable NAPA carries, are there any other alternatives to getting my speedo hooked up once and for all? Are there adapters or "lengtheners" pieces out there? Or, is it possible to make your own? If so, where can I get one of those?

I used a Lokar cable. It's one of their cut to fit cables.
With the way I routed mine it was the only cable that would fit.

the cable on my 85 is two pieces anyway. The main cable goes down to a shorter picece instead of going straight to the tranny. The junction is right about below the pedals, under the floor.

Mike, my old one was a single piece...I had no clue there were two piece cables. The one I have now is 62" I believe...and it is the longest one piece cable available @ NAPA.

Do either of you know if there is a 90 degree elbow I could install on the trans where the cable screws to? I think that would do it, and it might be cheaper than getting a new cable all together.

There are 90* adapters, but many of those are geared for speedo correction. The gear ratio of the adapter is usually stamped on the outside. New ones cost way more than a cable.

Yep, mine was two piece stock. I don't know what year it changed from one piece to two.

No, Because the one on my 86 was a one piece. I think I am using the 62" Jeff referred to. It just is long enough. I like the Lokar cable, might have to check on replacing mine with one.

I am sure it would...do you happen to have any part numbers and the place you purchased them from? Is the cable that connects to your trans the stock cable?

The lower cable is the stock one. I got the part number out of my parts book and called the dealer today about it. The number from the book had been changed 4 times. Anyway, the GM number now is 88959442. They really like it to. List price is $45.38. Wholesale for me was $31.76.

If I were you, I'd go junkyard hunting to see if I could find one. It may be this cable was used on trucks with 700R4's.

Jeff I ran into the same trouble. I found out that the cable you need is for a 66 vette and you need the longer one like you and I both found out. Ask for one at Auto Zone for the 66 vette and then tell them you need the longer one. It mounts perfectly.

Brandon, how much slack do you have in your cable? Reason I ask is because I have a 700 and you have a 350. I think on the 700 the place it mounts to on the tranny is further back than on a 350 transmission. Also, do you still have the part number? If no part number, do you remember how long the cable was?

I don't have the part number but I asked for the 66 vette one. I got the I want to say 66" length. I have plenty of slack but not enough where it has play in it. They give you a shorter one (stock length) than you need. Measure the one you have then add from there. They have a way of finding longer lengths than the stock one. Just ask for the 66 vette one and then the longer one and you should be good.
