How do I get this thing to stop???
I have a 63 GMC that runs great but doesn't stop at all. It's drums all the way around. Got pressure in the petal but still nothing on the ground. Thanks in advance.

Are hoses original? These tend to collapse internally with age, it won't show on the outside but the inside can get so messed up that it won't allow pressure to the wheel cylinders.

As Ivan D said i would check the lines first. He helped me out with my '82 gmc the lines was sticking and holding the brakes tight. I would probably replace all rubber lines the go from there. JOE

Plus too,, your ride is a '63, Prolly can use new brake lines anyway.

While you are checking the lines, it would be a good idea to inspect the wheel cylenders as well. If they are original, go ahead and replace them. Safety takes priority.

Well, I tore the brakes apart. As FlatBrokeRacing mentioned the wheel cylinders were frozen all the way out. Causing my brakes to constantly rub and not be able to stop me. Now I have to replace the wheel cylinders, brake shoes, and turn the drums. Thanks to everybody for the advice.

word to the wise:
Make sure to grind smooth the brake shoe contact points on the backing plates (or replace as needed) as this will cause poor performance from drum brakes. The backing plates get grooved and cause the shoes to hang up which can cause the truck to pull on hard braking or irregular wear on the friction materials. I would also very strongly consider changing the brake lines; they are not too expensive and will make a huge difference. p.s. dont forget to completely flush and bleed the system. |

Changed the brake lines. The master cylinder died on me tho. I'm probably gonna have everything replaced before this is all over. :rolleyes;
