front U joint is hitting the cross member

Is something missing? like a spacer were the cross member bolts to the frame? or is it tilted ?

once its locked in to 4wd and the pedal is pushed it beats the crap out of that cross member. the cross member had some serious wear on it from this.

any body have an idea why?
Thanks

here are the pics

Re: front U joint is hitting the cross member

I would think that maybe its just not high enough off the cross member or not the corect crossmember. did you put that transfer case in the truck? Thats not the case that came in a 71 so Im thinking it may have been hiting it since it was instaled. you may find you need to put a spacer in between it and the frame and the adaptor to lower it down out of the way some.

What year is the truck? That looks like a 208 transfercase....that should be mid 80s?

The mounts look pretty mushed too.

Re: front U joint is hitting the cross member

I should have given the lift and year and drive train specs DUHH !!

Its an 83 GMC short step side I don't know if it was originally a step side. It has a bow tie grill and no GMC marks left on it. but it came up as a GMC on the title

also it has a FF 14bolt rear and a 3/4ton D44 in front( it has 8 bolt axles on it so it may well be a 1/2ton with 8 bolt axles)

4 inch ORD shackle flip in the rear and 4 inch springs in the front. 3 inch body lift

The cross member in the pic is bolted directly to the frame it seems like a bushing should be there to me. I have one for my 205 in the blazer tomorow Ill see if it would fit in there...

Earl....
I just bought this truck recently I couldn't stand not having a truck to beat on. My blazer is going to take 6 more months at least and this truck was way to good of a deal to pass up.

Re: front U joint is hitting the cross member

I would try and change the TC ruber mounts and see if it helps they look worn out. if that doesnt do it you could add a spacer between the frame and the crossmeber.

Re: front U joint is hitting the cross member

that sounds about good..... I'm going to get fresh rubber mounts under it this weekend.

Then if it still hits Ill separate that cross member a half inch or so from the frame.

Any one have a similar year truck with the single cross member( my blazer has 2 ) and does it mount directly to the frame like this?

Re: front U joint is hitting the cross member

Re: front U joint is hitting the cross member

My 84 Burb looks just like that, but with better tranny mounts.
You are missing the right side transfer case to bellhousing brace bar.
Have a look at your right side motor mount,if it's done, it could be tilting the whole assembly...I just changed engine mounts on mine, and it lifted the motor an inch.
