Fan clutch on a 292?

I’ve got an ancient aftermarket flex fan on my 65’s 292. Had one come apart on my old Mustang years ago and figured I’m pushing my luck with this one in my truck.

I’m not interested in any kind of electric fan (I like simple). Was considering a fan clutch with maybe some kind of plastic fan. Anybody do anything similar?

I’m running an aluminum Champion brand radiator, but no shroud, as apparently nobody makes one for this application

Getting ready for summer, any advice?

Thanks,
Tom

If you have the space, a clutch + a 5 blade metal fan from a SBC might do the trick. Unless you have an overheat issue, get the standard duty clutch.

I believe my fan setup to be factory and there is no clutch. The fan is fixed and always turns at engine speed.

Re: Fan clutch on a 292?

A clutch & 7 blade fan for a small block will work if you have a 2 groove harmonic dampner. It will not clear a 3 groove. However the 292 I currently have in my truck came from an 85 K20. It has a 3 groove dampner & three blade clutch fan. It's the only three blade clutch fan I have ever seen. Every other one I have ever really looked at was 5 or 7.

Re: Fan clutch on a 292?

I used a new Hayden 2705 clutch and Derale 17119 fan On my 64 with a 292. The fan matched the diameter of the original and the clutch was about the same depth as the fan spacer that came on my truck

Re: Fan clutch on a 292?

Appreciate all the input, I figured I wasn’t the first to try this. Fortunately I have the two groove damper, so that should make things easier.
Thanks,
Tom
