HEI heat soak

Lately, after I have driven my truck for a day and have had multiple starts, the truck will just turn over and not start (or sound like its even getting spark). I have a timing light on me and i put it on to check for spark. The light doesnt flash. I had a can of starter spray and I sprayed it on the exposed coil to cool it of. It started right up. Why is my coil getting so hot? Does anyone have a wire diagram from the coil to the fuse box. Im thinking about running a new wire to the coil.

Improper wiring to an HEI is a common problem. Not sure if that would cause the coil to run hot though.

Have you recently made any changes to the electrical system?

The system has been the same and untouched for 7 years. The coil is only 3 months old and the other coil was doing the same thing, which is why I swapped them. I just thought resistance in the wire might cause it to heat up.

Are you using quality parts? Not unheard of to get a few bad parts. Check that your getting a full 12Vs to the coil.

What is my insulator? I removed the ceramic piece when I converted from points (assuming that is what your refering to).

It's the rubber washer in the center. The other part with the spring is the one I gave you the link to. You might want to consider just buying a new cap.

Vette Vet, im pretty sure that I have the graphite button piece under the rubber insulator.

I posted the picture from board member Shifty's FAQ to show CRM what the insulator looks like. The carbon button has to go through first to touch the rotor. If the picture is wrong then the button won't be through the cap far enough to hit the rotor and the motor won't get spark.If you're saying that the rubber insulator goes over the spring mount then you may be right. Looking up inside the cap at the carbon button would show which way is correct.

This shows the button so it should be easy to figure out how it goes.There may be a recess under the washer in the cap for the spring mount to to fit in. It's been awhile since I had one apart. I've got 3 or 4 out in the garage so I'll go look tomorrow.
