Purple Hornies????

Has anyone used these and which one. The collector type or the glasspack type. What did they sound like? If I remember they had a really low muffled tone.

Re: Purple Hornies????

Back in the day.....I thought they had a nice sound, but the glass never lasted long bolted right to the headers. As with any glass pack, I would move them back to get away from the heat. If they are still built same as they were (back in the 70's), they are a decent muffler. L

Re: Purple Hornies????

First off, don't get the kind that bolt right up to the headers (if you have long tube headers that is) because they will not bolt up due to a section of the frame hanging down right behind the collector. Also, if you are looking for something that sounds awesome, look into the Dynomax Bullet mufflers. I have a pair on my 72, and they sound really good.

Re: Purple Hornies????

Do they still make Purple Hornies?WOW!!I had them on a 442,the collector type.I just used them a short while and sold the car.I just didn`t want to get a custom exhaust made.
I have the Walker Turbo Tubes on my Highlander.I guess all that stuff is DynoMax now.I bought them in`91.They`re barely bigger than my pipe, around 3".I love them.

Re: Purple Hornies????

They do still make the Purple Hornies.......... I will go try to get info on them for yas...... I knew guys that ran the collector types on their Jeeps and I loved the sound. I would probably just cut em off and use em like dumps behind the cab.

Ok here ya go........

FlowTech Purple Hornie MufflersSound better than the rest.

Manufactured with a distinctive purple finish, these Purple Hornie glasspack mufflers have a tubular design that gives impressive sound and performance gains that are more than wild. A spiral louver baffle design is encased in a 16-gauge, 3 1/2 in. diameter steel shell to increase exhaust velocity. This also decreases backpressure, projecting the sound waves into a Fibermat material to produce a rich, powerful sound.

Re: Purple Hornies????

I almost bought a set last year for "GQ" before I bought Headers and did my Exhaust.

Very nice, Very loud, However as mentioned the bolt-up looked as if it wouldn't fit

Re: Purple Hornies????

The ones that bolt up to the collectors don't have any glass in them. They just have little fins in them. They were pretty loud on a 400 Pontiac.
