5.3 into a 97-98 chevy/gmc
hey guys i'm usually over on 73-87 side. but i have a question about a motor swap.
i've been looking for a 97 or 98 chevy or gmc. but i really want to swap a 5.3 in place of the 5.7 for gas mileage and i can find a 97-98 with a high miles motor and swap in a more fresh 5.3. how hard would it be? and what all would be involved? estimated cost? all input is appreciated

That is an awsome link, I have been pondering swapping my 5.0L to a 6.0L using a 4L60E instead of a 4L80E like most 6L came with.

Bwood, careful! 4l60e wont take the 6.0l torque.

While Clyde65 is correct, You will tear a 4l60 up just as easy with a 5.3. As long as it's good to begin with and you don't dog the piss out of it, it will be ok .

Re: 5.3 into a 97-98 chevy/gmc
If a 4l60e is all you have for the time being, then go with it. but it will not handle the TQ of a camed 6.0 period, unless you drive it like my mom, which I could never do and I doubt you could. a camed 5.3 will also tax the 4l60e but the tranny will last longer behind even a camed 5.3 than a camed 6.0

Re: 5.3 into a 97-98 chevy/gmc
My intention is to rebuild mine with the components to "beef" it up. I'm not looking to make a drag truck, just something that got some gonads to pull the bikes from race to race. My combined mileage out of my 5.0L is around 15. I don't see doin much worse with the 6.0 espesially with a 60E instead of an 80E. The rear end is 3.42, so with the P255/70R15s I should still see 2k at 70 mph. Honestly, I'm not too bad with the pedal, I think it will make a good combo for getting down the road.

Building the 60e will extend its lifespan, but won't necessarily save it. I've seen guys on ls1tech roast plenty of 60e's with big torque.

Re: 5.3 into a 97-98 chevy/gmc
when i graduate from school i want to start a swap ive been wanting to do.
buy a late 90's standard cab long bed k3500 with a 5 speed and a 454 and swap a stroked 8.1L into it. plans are for a mild sleeper diesel killer truck. and so i can have over 500 cubic inch engine in a steetable truck lol |
