31X10.5X15 on a 15X8 wheel?

Okay, there seems to be a bit of conflicting information regarding the 31X10.5X15 combo on 15X8 wheels. Some folks say, "Go ahead! No problems at all!" Others say, "Hmmm... you can do it, but I don't think it's a good idea!" Still others say, "Nope! It doesn't work!"

So what's the verdict, guys? Can I shoe a 15X8 wheel with 31X10.5X15 tires? I want a fairly aggressive tire that really fills the wheel well and I don't want a goofy 20-inch, $1,000 billet wheel in there. It's a truck, dammit!

PS: No offense to those that run giant wheels and rubber band tires. You do your thing and I'll do mine!

While we're at it, is there a list of the factory wheels that will fit the 6-lug pattern? If I'm not mistaken, the 6-lug wheels on the 73-87 4X4s will work. Also, the 6-lug wheels on some older Nissan and newer Toyota 4X4s will fit, too. Does anyone have a complete list?

Sure sounds like a perfect match to me! Probably more info at www.tirerack.com. General rule of thumb, tread width should be similar to (or 1" wider than) rim width. 10.50 tires go on 8" rims; 12.50 tires go on 10" rims.

One of my friends put some 31x10.50's on a set of 15x10's on his 4x4. They looked pretty ballooned on the rims....were too big for a 10" rim. I think a 8" rim would have looked much better....you should be fine

Cool Tire/Wheel Setup

Shuttermutt, when I first bought my 67 c20 it had a set of 31X10.5X15 tires on 15X8's wheels in front and the 31X10.5X15 tires on 15X10's wheels in the back. The only reason I removed them was that I wanted a new set tire/wheel setup. I bought the truck from my brother and he used the truck for quite awhile with that setup and did not have any problems at all. I went to a different tire size, but that is because I dropped the front 3" and the back 4". As a matter of fact I still have the old tire/wheel setup as a backup option.

Cool. Sounds like the combo will work just fine from what I'm hearing. I just didn't want to do anything totally unsafe. Thanks for the input, guys. Anybody with nothing better to do than to post pics of trucks with this combo would get a big "thanks" from me. I know there's a couple of pics floating around, but I can never seem to find them again.

Awesome! Now, does anybody care to take a stab at the second question? The steel wheels I'm running are beyond repair and can't be balanced properly. I'm hesitant to have new tires mounted on 'em and I'm very hesitant to get the living crud shook outta me on a 1,700 mile trip West in a couple of weeks.

I'd like to find a set of replacements, but the salvage yards up here won't talk to you unless you're VERY specific on what you want. Knowing what will fit could save me some time as I browse for potential replacements.

The K/20 had 31X10.5's on a 16.5" wheel. Might go to 33's when it's back together. My Blazer has 31X10.5's on a 15X8 wheel.

Can't seem to post pics at the moment - I'll try again later.

perfect fit

My assumption is any tire store around would recommend that exact match for wheel and tire combo. I even have seen... 35x12.50x15's in 8" ralley wheels. I also have a set of 235/70/15's stretched onto 8" wheels. Quite the variety but what you want is perfect medium.

When wew bought our 84 truck new, it had 31x10.50's on 8" rims from the factory. On my toyota i'm running 31x10.50's on a 7" rim. On #2 question, Most any 6 lug wheel except for dodge 6 lugs will fit the bolt pattern. On the import wheels you might have problems with not enough backspacing if you have disk brakes...

73-87 chevy ralley or plain wheels off of a 4X4 fit the 6 bolt pattern perfectly.

I have a pic right here of my truck from 4 years back, it was right after I replaced a bedside. I tried posting the pic but error message jumped up. I'll bet everytime someone tries to post a pic Josh will get an email about it. Sorry J, I tried about 3 or 4 times, .

Anyway, the tires are 31X10.5X15 Michelins on 15X8 rims (6 lug). Good fit, no problems. When I swapped front ends 2 yrs ago (1970 drum to 1971 disc) I had to get new 5 lug rims. The guy down at Big-O Tires (won't deal w/ them again, way too pricey) said the 15X8 were out of stock and he assured me that 15X7 would be ok for my tires. I guess he was right, its been two years and there have been no problems. Inflated to about 42 lbs, no uneven wear, smooth ride.

I'll try to get my pic into this thread tomorrow.

I run 32X11.50 on all my 4wds with factory rallies. I have used this combo for 15 tears or more without any problems.

Wheels and Tires

Long story made short.

I ran 15 x 8 wheels from the mid 70s on my 72 and 70 trucks. They worked fine for me.

I also ran 31x10.5x15's on said 15 x 8, 5 lugs on the 1972 C10.

No problems, and I really liked the ride and feel of the larger tires.

Go for it!

My 96 is running 31x10.50 x15 on 8" wheels. I think it is a perfect combo. I am not running on my 70 step now, but they fit just fine. No rubbing or other issues came up. It's a great combo for any truck far as I am concerned.
