D/S Key Hole only!

Any one else find it irritating that GM did away with the passenger side key lock access? My D/D '99 Tahoe has D/S - P/S and rear cargo door key lock access. Our '05 has ONLY the D/S. I find it a little irritating if I am with my wife and I can't unlock the door from her side. Have to walk around to the D/S. I don't carry a key FOB in my pocket for the auto door locks as I find it to be a bit too bulky with car keys, house keys and mail box key all on one key ring. Have a second key ring I carry which has keys for numerous out buildings, sheds, garage walk way door, etc. Along with the constant pocket knife I've carried since I was about 8 years old, more crap like a key fob in my pocket I don't need!

I'm sure it was a HUGE cost savings to GM when someone in a bean counter meeting suggested ....Let's do away with the P/S door lock, think of the $$ we'll save for larger profits.

Re: D/S Key Hole only!

Don’t know how big your town is and the crime rate, but here in Vegas we’re swapping out D/S side locks with no lock handles. Having those locks is the easiest way to break in. And the factory anti-theft is a joke.

So it’s funny you’re annoyed with one and me in Vegas is annoyed with having locks that’s easily punched out and I have to get rid of them all together.

Re: D/S Key Hole only!

Our town is about a 7,700 population little farming community. Some aviation and light industry but mostly farming. Wheat, corn, some cotton and cattle is the big driver here. Like all towns in the US we do have some crime but very little in comparison to the big cities.

Guess just really annoyed that GM eliminated the P/S key access for the sake of saving a few $$. Same thing with roll up manual windows. Don't think you can buy a new vehicle now days with the old standard hand crank windows. As we "progress" (?) we as a population sure seem to want everything done for us or easy with not much effort. I like my vent windows on my '71 4x4 and my '57 2 dr. sedan. Miss them for the air movement they allowed when really windy and cold outside for a full down window.

Re: D/S Key Hole only!

My 1962 GMC K1000 Suburban only has a passenger side key lock. The owner's manual tells you how to lock up, lock driver side from the inside and exit the passenger side. I hear an optional drivers side keyed lock option was $1.65.

Wow. How convenient they made it.

I wonder if you could use a '99 T800 RH door handle with a re-keyed lock cylinder on the RH side of the newer T800 trucks.

Yes
I worked at an auto manufacturing plant from 92 to 2010.

Over the years I watched them slowly Cheapen them up.

It was called a Kaizen.

Kaizen is an approach to creating continuous improvement based on the idea that small, ongoing positive changes can reap significant improvements.

They would eliminate bolts and pushpins and wiring and so on and so on.

It was sad to watch it Evolve.

Kaizen is the Japanese concept of "Change for the better" Too bad the US corporate culture corrupted it.
