Question Factory Seat Belt, operation question..

May be a stupid question but,

I have noticed that both of my 3 point factory belts do not lockup. Seems like on most modern cars if you give the belt a quick tug the belt return will lock..

meaning in an accident the belt will stop your body from becoming part of the dash..

Do I need new belts?? or is this normal in all these trucks.

Re: Factory Seat Belt, operation question..

On my 83, the driver's side seat belt does not lock, the passenger side does. All other vehicles I have owned lock when yanked (inertia feature.) So, I say they should lock when yanked and both you and I have improperly functioning seat belts. The lap belt portion does stay in place.

Yes I agree with you, looks like both my belts are junk. my lap and shoulder belts do not lock at all... even with a real hard pull. that sucks because belts are not cheap and finding one in a wrecker in my area is not going to happen.

Any idea if newer pickup belts will fit?

Re: Factory Seat Belt, operation question..

is this with the door open or closed?
my drivers locks with the door closed, not open
there is a pin in the door jamb, open, it releases the belt
make sure it's not jammed or fulla paint and stuck

Re: Factory Seat Belt, operation question..

Double check those belts. I'm pretty sure there's an inertia mechanism in there. A little round weight underneath that activates the locking pawl. Good test would be to find a desolate piece of blacktop and get the truck to about 40 and apply the brakes hard (not lockup) to check the belt lockup. If they don't lock then, replace.

if you want to keep your original belts check out the link, they can rebuild them to like new and you will never know that they were broken.

Mine if I go over a bump with enough vigor they look up. I believe this is the inertia lock activating correct?
