what are the best year hei distributers to use on a 68 chevy truck when converting from points?

I'm not sure of any of the years performing better than others, or of any differences between them other than some have the coil in the cap and some have a remote coil. I prefer the in cap coils just to clean things up a bit.

You only need two tools in life - WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.

If a hammer doesn't fix it, you have an electrical problem!

For what it cost for a used one you can get a new one from White performance on eBay. 65k volts too!

They don’t have the red cap, but here is a link for the clear. You can call if you want red which they usually have.
