Best way to install back glass? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have never installed any glass what is the best way to install the back(small window)? step by step for dummies is prefered.

Install the rubber on the glass. Put a really small piece of rope in the groove around the top. Lubracate every thing with soapy water. Install the bottom flat groove on the truck and make sure the rope sticks inside the cab. Get a helper to hold the glass on the outside. Start in the bottom corner and start to pull the rope in. This should curl the weather strip around the metal that it mounts to. It is really harder to descripe than it is to do. GOOD LUCK

That is pretty much it. It is a 2 man job and by the time you do a second window you will be a pro. That is how it was when we installed the windows into Andy's burb. The first was trial and error, the second and third windows went in like we knew what we were doing.

The rope I used was something I picked up to have when camping. It was 1/8" braided cord that looks just like hiking or work boot laces.

The only other help I can be is to tell you to pull the cord straight up and parallel to the glass. Picture this. You have the cord in the groove. If you are on the bottom of the window you will be pulling the cord straight up to the ceiling not pulling it towards the dash. Clear as Mud? Good luck.

After you get the lip pulled in,slap the glass with your open hand several places to seat the rubber......69longhorn.

What about a thin layer of sealer...not so much for leaks, but to protect the metal from rusting? I'm getting ready to do mine too. Thanks!

The rope trick worked great for me reinstalling my back glass, I used no sealant, but it does not leak. The factory manual did not mention sealant on the back window.
If only the windshield was the same.....

Oh yea don't try this trick with windsheild unless you are really brave.They are much harder to do because of the curve and the double lip thing. Don't get me wrong it can be done. I have a friend that does windshields for a living,and he helped me put my windshield in. While doing the slapping with open hand trick he broke it. It was cool tho, glass shops can break so many a month and not even get charged for it. All part of the bizz.

I agree with Tom on the windsheild,they are very easy to break! the glass does need to be patted in to seat the seal,but very gently! I worked in glass for about 10yrs,& have broken a pc or 2 myself. I use a hook tool to set the windsheild,not a rope.....69longhorn.
