Winter Ride

I got my parents good this time. It getting close to christmas they wanted to get me some stuff right? Well, honestly I couldnt think of anything I wanted. They shopped and got all of my sister's stuff and kept bugging me for the last couple of weeks to find something. So I did, a truck. Funny thing is they wanted me to pick something so bad then when I did they didnt really want to get it lol. Anyway, I got this from my grandpa for $800. Its what he payed for it (he bought it and his 76 4x4 together for $2,500..not bad huh?).

I plan on dropping the insurance on my nova till next summer and just drive this during the winter. My car spins to easily on wet roads so it would be bad on ice, so driving this will be better anyway. I could probally afford insurance on both, but I cant afford insurance AND gas for both. On the plus side, this big truck will get better gas mileage then the nova . Hard to believe

Only thing I hate about this truck is that im gonna have to go completely thru it and check everything. Thanks to a previous owner who didnt know what they were doing or was just lazy. Maybe it was a little mix of both? I need a park light..but thats the easy part. Im going to re-wire the entire truck. The lights dont work and none of the guages do thanks to some "creative" work from whoever owned it. Not to mention the oil pressure gauge is actually UNDER the hood Guess they wanted to jump out and raise to hood to make sure the engine was still getting enuff oil pressure? (BTW: See it under the mastercylinder? ) They had broke the front driveshaft off at the universal joint and instead of fixing it they just layed the driveshaft up on the crossmember out of the way. I went underneath it and checking it out the other day seeing what all I needed to buy and they didnt even tighten up half the bolts. One bolt on the transfer case was sticking out about a half inch instead of fitting snug and being tight. I must say I think this is going to be a good truck tho, because even with all this stuff messed up the truck still runs great. It has to be good to survive what ever kind of owner it had.

I also need to put a hanger on one of the mufflers. You can see in the pic it is hanging down lower. There is 1 or 2 lug nuts off of each wheel also

Few more:

Just so you know, that truck is gonna absolutely SUCK on ice and snow. Those tires are designed for digging through mud :p If you wanna get good traction with the thing, get it some tall skinny tires, the smaller the contact point of the tire with the ground (with good traction promotion in that point) the better your traction will be

I've got 32 x 7s on my 2wd truck, and I can easily out accelerate / stop before a buddy of mine with a 96 Dodge 1/2 ton 4x4 with 33 x 11.5s and a 4 inch lift :P He can get outta the ditch a whole lot easier than me though, lol

All that said, that is one SWEET truck man I'm planning to convert to 4x4 myself, probally running with 1 ton springs and 3/4 ton running gear and a set of 33 x 10.5s

Wow, sounds like a great deal.

I agree with the tires. You want a narrower tire for snow and ice.

Yea its a 10 bolt front, 14 rear. I agree with you about the ice and snow...but then again its hard to get anything to grab on ice. Snow it should do good enuff to get me by, and play in mud along the way . Its gotta be better in snow then my nova lol.

Only bad thing about buying a truck already together is that I dont know alot about it yet. I dont know the gearing (although it is really low aka high ratio). The owner my grandpa bought it from (was actually from a car lot but the guy that runs the lot said the owner told him this..) said it had $1,700 worth of engine work done. That may and may not be true. It seems to have a hell of alot of power. Doesnt look to flashy on the outside, but never know about the inside. $1,700 worth of work or not it runs great...and thats all I care about.

I like its look, looks tough. Its pretty high too, ive seen some with 40's and still not but maybe an inch if that taller. I would like to get some 38's later down the road (no time soon, whenever these wear out) to help fill in the wheel wells. The 36's look smaller on it then most trucks, I guess just because it has a good amount of lift.

Since we are on the topic of the truck...

The 4x4 is big but not quite as big as my dads truck. I think you will agree. Sorry for the bad pics, he just got in and it was dark. Since it was misting rain, the mist showed up when I tried to use the flash. But anyway just to give you an idea. Peterbuilt 13 speed 14.6 liter CAT 500hp (not turned up, set at stock). He did have a newer body style freightliner but his load shifted and caused it to flip. Bad thing about hauling cattle.

Two more pics of it that I took a few days ago. It was real bright so they arent that great either. The 3rd pic is of his Freightliner he had. That pic is it AFTER it was wrecked...they said it was totalled what do you think? It had a smaller C12 CAT that was turned up to 450hp. The last 2 are of trucks he drove (not his own) after he wrecked his before he got this pete. The red one was a peice of junk, didnt run half the time. The blue one had the 14.6 also. It had around 1.5 million miles and still had more power (and was more relieable) then the red one. All trucks had CAT engines except the red one, it had a Detroit.

Finally got it to work. First 2 are 2 trucks he drove while his was being looked at. Third pic is of the first truck that he wrecked and was said to be totalled. Although the pic you see is it AFTER the wreck...doesnt look totalled. Last 2 are just a few more of his new truck.

looks like a good deal to me. what trans and case does it have in it? also, replacement tires for it should be cheap, those are Humvee takeoffs.

The 14 bolt rear will handle 44's, however that front axle is pushing it with those 36's.

Nice mud truck though, I think I would have to raise the rear end up some, I don't like that saggy butt look
