I want this Pontiac engine for my truck...
From eBay...the video clip says it all. An all-aluminum 389 in a '62 Catalina bubble-top with Super Duty and Swiss Cheese components. Don't know if it has an aluminum front cap, but that would be sweet.

Re: I want this Pontiac engine for my truck...
Here's the plan for you: Buy the car, pull the engine, drop in a crate 383 painted with aluminum paint, and take it to Barrett-Jackson. Then the engine only costs you the difference. Who knows, with the way cars sell there, you might even make a profit.

10 years ago I had a 26000 original paint 2 door just like that....well without the 427.....he is right,,,,it just wallows down the road...
Regretted selling that car to this day...the interior looked like it was never sat in.

...."A turbo Subaru would blow it into da weeds, BUT IT WOULDN'T SOUND RIGHT DOIN' IT."
Hearing the Pontiac, and then that '64 427 Ford...just helps me relive my youth. I grew up with those cars, owning a '64 Bonneville convertible, as well as a '64 Ford convertible. Nope, don't have 'em. Don't have my youth, either. Just think, one of these days, a kid in his teens today, will look back on the sound of 4-banger running a fart can muffler and have the same nostalgic tone in his voice that I do today.

Re: I want this Pontiac engine for my truck...
I hear you, but I think the idea was to build something that never was built. I don't remember any bubble top Pontiacs, after '61. It may have been, but I don't remember any.
Motor Trend did a test of a '62 Super Duty Catalina, that had an aluminum front cap, a lightened (swiss cheese) chassis, and had a 421, 4-speed and a short set of gears. It was a drag car, from an era when Pontiac was up against the likes of Stage III Plymouth and Dodge's running 413/Torqueflites, 406 Tri-power Fords, and 409/425HP Chevies. It was the heyday of Super Stocks and ushered in the age of Muscle Cars. If you were of age at that time, you know what I mean. If not, it's history that you read. Back then, you could order what you wanted. If you did well, you might get a nod from the factory and they'd help you go faster. Keith Seymore...a site member...has some posts on here that are all about it. It's worth a look-see.

Re: I want this Pontiac engine for my truck...
That's a beautiful car! I love those. '61 is my favorite year for GMs. Pontiac was in the performance arena before those aluminum motors were built. '62 was the last year for bubble tops.

Re: I want this Pontiac engine for my truck...
Nice pics. Bubble tops are the shiznits. While Chevy had 'em in '62, I still say Pontiac didn't build that body style after '61. Until someone can prove it otherwise, I will stick that idea.
But, love me some Super Stock!!! Still want that engine...

Re: I want this Pontiac engine for my truck...
I think you're right. All I see is 1 of 2 and the other one states it's a custom job. I have seen rare few '62 Chevys. That's why I figured the Pontiacs were original. One reason I came around to choosing '61 as my favorite year was because I thought it was the last bubble top,and I see them as the transition from late '50s finned turnpike cruisers to '60s Super Stock era. The first Super Sports and the Chevys looked like a '60 with the fins folded down from the rear. '62s were my favorite for most of my life. That '62 409 Belair bubble top is a local car and I drool every tome I see it.

Re: I want this Pontiac engine for my truck...
Yes, that's right. There were 2 1962 Pontiac bubbletops produced. The one above is a '62 with a '61 roof attached, as you said. The downsized '61 Pontiac was a double edged sword for Pontiac. It was revered by the younger crowd and racers, but was not a hit with the coat and hat wearing older buyers that bought into the "bigger is better" philosophy. A lot of older, long time Pontiac buyers were not pleased with sleeker, sportier '61, switched brands and Pontiac answered back with going back to the status quo land yacht of the day. The '61 was truly ahead of it's time, and it is by far my favorite car of that era. I have always thought the '61 Pontiac Bubbletop could by considered the first musclecar. I actually think it was a better looking looking car than the '64 GTO and it was a much faster if equipped with Super Duty engine.

Re: I want this Pontiac engine for my truck...
That is a neat car! My local junkyard growing up had a Bonneville with 8-lug wheels. That's the only one I ever saw in person. I too have a soft spot for Pontiacs. Had a '72 Grandville and a '77 Bonneville. Loved them both.

Re: I want this Pontiac engine for my truck...
for those that think that this type of car is slow compared to to days pocket rockets, they are as fast as the cars of today and on 1950 and 1960 tires. only thing is they only go straight and the top end aint to fast either, those brakes are good but only for a very short time and not in the rain. but for the 1/4 they are still killer.

Re: I want this Pontiac engine for my truck...
When you compare apples with oranges, there will be differences. We can bench race these for days on end. If you were there (I'm almost 64), then you know what went on.

You're right about that! These old Super Stocks are MUCH faster than they were then, by just adding modern tires. I've seen some of these cars run in the low 10's with modern tires, and still running 50 year old engines/trans. I love watching the white Impala 409 4 speed in this video!!

Mine is almost stock now. Old motor from my car is collecting dust right now. If I had an extra set of headers, maybe one day...

Re: I want this Pontiac engine for my truck...
I love those '61 Pontiacs! I wanted a Pontiac motor for my '67 GMC. It seems like a perfect match since they didn't offer the '67s with V8s (till near the end of the year) and the first V8 GMCs had Pontiacs. I settled for a 327,but things could change if the right opportunity comes along.
