Vent Window Removal

I am going to strip my old doors tomorrow and I am a little concerned about taking out the vents. I know this has been covered here before and I did do a search and I am seeing conflicting info. So here are my questions:

1. Does the window have to come out first or doesn't it matter?
2. Do I just remove the 3 screws on the angled part and it comes loose?
3. I read something about removing the weather striping, I don't understand
4. Sounds like I remove the screws, tilt back and turn toward the cab, is that all?

Any tips, tricks or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Re: Vent Window Removal

Agreed, unscrew the 3 screws, and I also believe there's a bolt in a mount in the bottom of the assembly on the side of the door. Then it just takes patience and a little jiggling. I had my windows out when I did mine and the extra room was helpful - but not necessary to get the job done.

Re: Vent Window Removal

Seems like a huge job, but with patience it goes pretty smoothly. I had to do mine twice because I thought the seals were supposed to flap over the edge of the door. My only addition to the suggestions is to use some painters tape, at least two layers to protect your paint.

Re: Vent Window Removal

I just replaced my vent windows two weeks ago, and all I can add is to buy some extra patience. I bought brand new vent windows and side windows and wanted to throw them across the garage the first nite I attempted to install. Little did I know to put tape on the edges of the door, so I read a forum before I put the passenger side in and it saved the paint. Drivers and passengers side windows were straight forward but it was quite nerve wrecking trying not to scratch the brand new windows with the tab of the vent window that slides down in between the door. I put tape on the sharp edges to alleviate any possible scratches. Oh boy, have fun........

Re: Vent Window Removal

Well it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be other than I did not realize that they were riveted to the forward window guide. I ended up pulling out the entire window (which I intended on anyway), and once I did that and removed the 2 screws for that guide it came right out with a little minimal manipulation.

Re: Vent Window Removal

You planning to redo the seals while you have them apart? If so I would reccomend leaving the main pivot rivet in the vent window and working around that. I was able to get mine done without removing that. I think the aftermarket crush rivets are inferior to the OEM, especially on that main pivot. I used a combo of the crush rivets and pop rivits to get my window frame back together.
