It all boils down to effort vs turns. The easier a box is to turn the more you turn it. Nothing wrong with a stock 24:1 box and I sure would not go a slower ratio yet. The single biggest "trick" is to remember to have the truck in motion when you are turning the wheel. If you are affecting the effective steering ratio with huge tires or incorrect offsets going for a "look", the consider a power steering coversion.

Thanks for the info, so the stock steering box is 24:1 ratio. I have bigger tires turning while moving no problem but I would still like a steering bos with a larger ratio. Why would it be so bad to drive with a larger ratio?

If you go to a ratio to lower the steering effort, you will have to crank the wheel more revolutions for the same amount of turn at the wheels. This would slow your steering response time.

That pretty much sums it up. Slower box or a bigger than the stock 17 x 17 1/2" oval steering wheel is going to take more turns or motion to perform the same task. If you think the stock wheel is too big you really need to consider adding P/S. A 292 is a heavy engine and a four-speed or A/C make it more so. Depending on your current front wheel and tire selection some improvement "might" be possible while keeping "big" wheels.

I think I would die if I had slower turning in my truck... and mine as a replaced box to help get rid of the play... not sure of the ratio... I'm also riding on stock rims and don't plan to change. it took a few miles tog et used to the manual steering, but I am perfectly fine with the effort required to steer, and have been considering a slightly smaller steering wheel when I replace my cracked to heck original.

Slower than already slow steering? Larger than already too big of a steering wheel?
Those are both ridiculous solutions to an already cumbersome steering.

Power steering is a night and day improvement and you will only wonder why you didn't do it sooner. After the P steering, the next night/day improvement I made to my truck was AC.

It's already about 6 turns lock to lock if I recall. If you increased it more than that, it would look like you were wrestling a bear in the cab. To parallel park, you would be required by law to set out orange cones. Ha, ha.
I'd rather enjoy my old truck than arm wrestle it.

Joking aside, it's your truck, so what ever makes you happy.
