Looking for someone to weld in my step notch! TX

didnt know where else to put this lol. im looking for someone here in or close to rosenberg to weld in my step notch for my suburban. i already pulled the entire floor out, and will pull whatever else i need to keep the cost down. i need someone who knows what they are doing, but could maybe cut me a deal the notch should be in next week...a tacked together porterbuilt step notch. the shop down the road wanted 450 and thats to have it ready and they just weld it in. i thought that was a ridiculous price...i cant pay anything near that. if you want..you can even have the motor and trans thats in the truck now to cover the costs. it doesnt run but its not locked up and spins free...just a thought.

anyone let me know if they can help.

mods, if this is in the wrong spot, please move it for me. thanks!

Look in the Yellow Pages (or whatever search index you use) for a welding service near your area.

There was an old member hear (FirstGen) that built a sweet little short-step 6.0/6spd hot rod. He lived in an apartment & started out w/a long step. He prepped everything so the guy could access the areas needed to be welded, then he had a mobile welding service out & the guy welded it up outside.

Re: Looking for someone to weld in my step notch! TX

I thought about doing that when i seen a few craigslist ads that offered mobile welding services. I just didn't know if it was a good idea to do that since they really don't have experience bagging a truck. I guess I could try it though since all they would be doing is welding..

They're not bagging a truck; you are. They're welding steel which is their trade.

As long as you have things prepped, it can be done. If you're not sure what to do, then you need more than someone to assist w/welding it up, you need someone w/experience doing fab work and/or step-notches.

Have you talked to the guys in Sugarland. The shop is All Out Offroad- LINK I don't know anything about them other than the trucks I have seen they build.

I know it's an offroad shop, but I have seen bagged trucks in front of their shop as well.

It might be worth looking in to.

That would prolly be a good idea to check them out
I went to their Services page & it lists "CUSTOM FABRICATION AND WELDING"

But they may want $450 too

Re: Looking for someone to weld in my step notch! TX

If you want you could bring it over this side of town. I can check with our welder that does work for us. He has a big shop over at Hobby airport. He has done some complete frames from scratch on pre 48 cars. You see his work all over Houston but don't notice it. He is around $300 per foot for custom steel fab work however since he loves cars and fabicating he gives a real good price break.

Re: Looking for someone to weld in my step notch! TX

do you want the notch smoothed, or just someone to weld it in and thats it. make sure you pre fit the notch. i know porterbuilt is good, i still had to fit mine a little. the mobile welders do not like standing around. i think most of the mobile guys use stick welders also. he is going to need some room if he stick welding it.

Coming from an Engineering and Construction background I know a lot of welders even ones that can do CR moly to 4" thk.

I have used J Ober and Sons on the west side.
http://www.oberandsons.com/

They do great work but not sure they do it off site. Have not used them in 10 years or so.
Tom Young at American Heli-Arc is a great clean shop also. True Artist he does a lot of MC Frames and used to be a Pro Stock HD drag bike builder.
He is a great guy and knows his stuff. They have done some tank fab for us

http://www.americanheliarc.com/

I can check with my rig welder buddies and see if any of them are willing to do it. Their kind of funny at times

Re: Looking for someone to weld in my step notch! TX

that is funny, Tom Young actually lives in my neighbor hood. His shop is right down the street from me. He is one of the best welders i know and can weld anything, and i mean anything. The only problem is that he is high end. You could find someone else cheaper, but the quality would be excellent.

Yeah he's the bomb. I used to race against him when I drag raced Harleys. Jon Marchman built my motors. He is absolutely the best welder I know. I've known a lot of welders in the last 45 years of being in the business all over the united states. If you want it done right he's it.
He is worth the money but he is HIGH.

I know that doesn't do you any good KEV2809 but if you want the best. I haven't got a hold of anyone yet been busy

Might try talking to the local muffler shop. I know several of them around me will weld anything you take em. They MIG all day every day and a lot of them are really good welders. Usually not expensive either. Just a thought.
