Don't think that was military, but I saw one years ago. It was a 1/2 short wheel base. other than that, don't know anything about them.

Re: any u guys seen somthen lk this

There were conversions in the '70s and '80s called TerraVans that were GMs. Fords were called QuadraVans. There's a company 9n PA called Quigley that still does the conversions. Not sure, but maybe they are the ones that did the ones in the 70s-80s.

Re: any u guys seen somthen lk this

The two drive shafts go to a independent front rear, each front wheel has its own pumpkin with gears, one is independent from the other. The one I seen in the bone yard was a 1 ton Ford dually.

Re: any u guys seen somthen lk this

Still don't think this is a Mil Van. Most Mil cargo type vans are all Cube Vans (van cab-box rear) Regular vans are almost always passenger vans with windows and I've never seen one in my 30yrs in the service that was 4 wheel drive. They usually use crew cabs and have in Chevy, Ford, and Dodge and Willys since the 50s.

If it is Mil there will be a metal ID plate on it.

I would like to see better pictures of the front differential.

There are 4x4 converted vans all over my neck-of-the-woods; but utilize a solid front axle. I've never seen an arangement like that! That is something else! I'd love to learn more about it...

Very interesting...do you have any photos of the transfercase and any of the wheel removed? Are there any markings on the differentials?

Re: any u guys seen somthen lk this

I can’t recall the name of the converter that did these oddball IFS 4x4 conversions on old vans but they are pretty rare. I remember correctly, these were only made for about 3 - 5 years. I wish I could find the article I read a while back on these. While they are rare to find in person, there are not rare to see them around in the internet. There was one on Ebay just a few weeks ago that was in really clean shape and working order.

One thing they are not, are GM experimental vehicles. These were made by a conversion company.

Check out the twin front drive shafts and differentials.

Hehe, just one of many pictures floating around of these. I finally remembered what they were called……

Vemco VX4 V-drive! It was invented by a guy in Ft. Wayne, IN then built by Dana Spicer. It is pretty obvious why this mess wasn’t a success.

Here is a link to the patent.

And a link to the patent summary.

Re: any u guys seen somthen lk this

I seen one also in a old bone yard up in hagerstown md . Ford one ton box van sitting on its side just like the one above this post . I never seen anything like that till that day very intresting on how they did it . I wonder if it was a strong set up ? look like two dana 44s with just the short shaft on both sides .
