long vice short water pump

Folks,
I have posted on this before, but now need some more info. I was planning going with my long water pump, but had to move my motor .5 inches forward, now it really looks like the long water pump and set up is really close - using the stock radiator and position...anybody done this (using the long water pump with the stock radiator)...? If I have to get to the short pump, I will have to figure a new way for my alternator bracket - I wanted to run the alt and the power steering pump in low positions (alt on passenger side, p/s pump on driver's side)....I am interested in suggestions....

They probably will need to know what fan setup you are running and a photo or two always helps.

Yep, I am interested in folks who are currently using the stock radiator setup with the long water pump - interested in what type fan, if a standard or electric.

I used a radiator from an LCF GMC in my truck which placed the end of the water pump shaft about 3/8" from the radiator even though it's a short shaft pump. A mechanical fan is out of the question. I used a stock 12" GM electric fan on the front of the radiator. I haven't had any troubles with it since I built it in '93.

Interesting. So you put that radiator (It is probably obvious to anyone else, but I don't know what LCF is) in the stock location? Do you have pictures of how it is mounted? Now this was with a short pump, right?

long water pump, big truck radiator in stock 6 cylinder location, mid 70's fan shroud, after market aluminum fan. Fan required 1" shim to center in shroud. leaves about 3-4" clear to radiator. If your radiator is in the stock v-8 location a short water pump will work, that is what they came with. Long water pump crowds the radiator.

LCF is Low Cab Forward, 2 ton? and up.


My truck's an original V8 so the radiator is maybe 5" closer to a V8 engine than the 6 cyl truck mounting location. The radiator mounting brackets were modified so the radiator would fit in the stock 1/2T Chevy location.

Hmm... looks like the radiator isn't as close as I remember. Guess that means I'm officially getting old. But I do know the angle of the fan and the angle of the radiator weren't the same and there wasn't enough room for the fan at the bottom. Maybe that's where the 3/8" comes from.

Here's some pictures - I measured this, it looks closer in the pictures - it is about 1/2 inch. I could make it work...I would have to put an electric fan on the front......the x-like metal rods seem to be in the way (not in the pics).

Mine is that close and alls i did was stagger two electric fans. test drove it a few times and it seems to be ok.

I saw yours and you are using a later model radiator - I have the stock one. Would a later modek be narrower, but still cool effectively? Also, what fans are those you have?

Does that pulley have countersunk bolts? I can't see any bolt heads.

A Ford Taurus fan is a great choice for a lot of vehicles but I don't know if it will fit with stock X braces. BMW uses some small fans that aren't too deep and move a lot of air. I've used those for projects.

Yes, it does have counter sunk bolts. I am considering looking at radiators in my local salvage yard....I will take some measurements on the support bracket and see what I can do.

When you say way forward, it is about 1/2 inch forward of what is likely the stock location - as I have about 3/4 clearance of the firewall. The radiate is tilted slightly but it looks factory. I did notice, that compared to other pictures your engine seemed pretty far back. That is a long water pump on yours, right?

Also, aren't you using a camaro or other GM front end...would that reposition the engine some?

The pic shows were the engine is positioned...

i just pulled the ramjet specs out to make sure that i wasn't misleading you, yes it is a long water pump.
i'm running a fatman mustII x-member on mine.
here's the best picture i could find of the firewall clearances
the bump out in back is for 2 big plugs that come out of the back of my distributor.



your motor mounts look about the same as mine on the centerline of the x-member
check out the radiator location in this pic and compare it to yours



i know the 58-9 rad support is different, not sure how much.

Orge, thanks. I am not sure what the deal is as you are right, there's a difference, but we seem to be within an acceptable tollerance. I did notice that the radiator is tilted (on mine) but it seems to be factory to compensate for the way the front support sits. I am going to look at it closer when i get home. Regardless, I am now considering a different radiator....
