Merry Christmas! And I have a great wife...

Merry Christmas. My wife totally surprised me this morning. I've been saving up for a welder, and under the tree was a Hobart AutoArc 130. I'm not really experienced with welding, but it looks to be a good unit, and it includes the gas valve and a cart.

Tell me what you think.

She also got me gloves and an apron. The welder came with a hood, but I'm thinking I'll run down to Harbor Freight tomorrow and get an auto-darkening hood (any thoughts on that?). I'll have to check with my buddy who's a welder to find the best place to get a tank, but that's definitely in the plan.

And I already have some scraps of metal set aside for practice. I even kept my old fender that I replaced so I could practice on it, and maybe use some of it for a patch as well.

And I did get her some nice stuff, but she definitely outdid me this year!

Re: Merry Christmas! And I have a great wife...

for the $ the hf hood works. I have one its ok. an i figure if it breaks i could buy 3 more an still be under the $ of a good one. when you go too hf bring extra $ cause you'll find more extras too go with your setup.

lil word of advice.

when you really get into it besure too have a extra spool or two of wire on hand. because you will run out in the middle of a project. same as gas but i keep pretty good tabs on mine. an the local ag center seems like they are allways open to get a refill.

just remember saftey first a good fire extinguisher should allways be in reach when welding i have two screwed too my welder cart.

That's good advice. I was just checking my garage fire extinguisher and I think it's time to upgrade.

I use the HF auto darkening hood. It's a great Hobby hood, but would never cut it in production welding. The price is right and they work well tho.You should probably grab a pair of MIG pliers ,and an extra set of gloves. You'll want more than one grinder to be able to use a wire wheel, grinder dic and flap wheel without stopping to change wheels.Start buying clamps also. You''ll probably never have enough until you start putting them away then you'll have too many.

It's worth it to spend the coin and get a GOOD helmet.

For your tank an Gas call Humphries in Lehi (Utah). That is where I always have mine refilled, and where I bought them from.

Always be sure to turn the bottle off when you are not using it. It will leak the gas out if you don't...
