Edelbrock 1406 Chevrolet 350

I installed a 1406 on my stock 350 recently. Now that I have moved to a warmer climate I'm getting some carb boil.

I currently have an aluminum adapter from the stock 350 to the 1406.

So my question is, do they make a Phenolic adapter/Spacer to replace the aluminum spacer? Or do I have to go Engine > Aluminum Adapter > Phenolic Spacer > Carb?

I looked and couldn't find any finite answers.

Ahh yes! I saw that, but the "Quadrajet" confused me, but after looking at it I think that is exactly what I need.

Upon further review it looks like that adapter is for a Quadrajet to Holley 4150

Re: Edelbrock 1406 Chevrolet 350

I have a 1406 too .. same problem. I have been reading about how the Edelbrocks don't like a lot of fuel pressure. Does yours have a regulator on it? I'm thinking about putting one on mine. they suggested 4-6pounds max.

Drive it for a while, get it hot then it sites for maybe 45 min and it's hard to start? .. that's what mine is doing.

Re: Edelbrock 1406 Chevrolet 350

Mine is definitely boiling gas from the carb getting too hot.. The cast iron intake with the aluminum adapter transfer the heat to the carburetor.

I want to put a Phenolic Spacer as heat sink to help with heat dissipation.

I tested my pressure and I'm sitting at 4.5 PSI.

Re: Edelbrock 1406 Chevrolet 350

Wow, I live in Southern Caliornia and never "had carb boil" even on 110 deg days. I'm also running a 190 deg thermostat.
So maybe it's a fuel pressure problem like CC69Rat says, I run a cheap O'Reilly's fuel pump.

Re: Edelbrock 1406 Chevrolet 350

I can hear and see gas vapor coming out of the the carb after I have driven at temperature. So it is definitely boiling.

Re: Edelbrock 1406 Chevrolet 350

(just kidding .. )

I had the carb off mine not too long ago. We were installing the intake. the gas line was just loose the line was poking up beside the alternator) To get the balancer on TDC, I hopped in the truck and bumped the starter while my dad watched the line on the balancer. When the pump hit, gas shot all the way to the firewall. .. yeah..

From what I understand, the Edelbrock carbs don't like the pressure. It will actually push the needles (?) off the seats and let gas drip down into the intake causing it to flood on hot starts. It may be that gas is passing by the seats in yours, allowing it to go somewhere it's not supposed to be (I'm a carb rookie)

I'm going to try a regulator on mine and if it doesn't stop it will be looking for a new home.

I had the hard start issue and I used a phenolic 4 hole, 1 inch spacer. Solved the problem and cost less than 20 bucks.

The phenolic spacers makes a serious difference on the Edelbrock carbs. Use the thicker ones, they work best.

Same problem on mine. I purchased an Edelbrock fuel pump and a phenolic spacer. That did the trick!

Re: Edelbrock 1406 Chevrolet 350

Edelbrocks hate heat, excessive fuel pressure and poorly adjusted floats. I run 3 of them: a 1405, 1406, and 1806 AVS and all of them need work out of the box. BUT once everything is dialed in they are excellent low maintenance carbs. I've pulled them from the box brand new with floats out of whack from being used as a football during shipping. That caused some issues til I popped the top and dialed everything in.

As far as the OP's issue, The cast iron manifold with heat crossovers is killing you, and the Qjet adapter, phenolic spacer, carb solution is a bandaid.

In my opinion, used aluminum SBC intakes are abundant and cheap, plug your crossovers with the Felpro inserts, slap on a used aluminum intake and see if that cures the issue.... If not a small phenolic spacer or thick gasket may be needed.

Re: Edelbrock 1406 Chevrolet 350

Crap. I wish I had the Edelbrock part number I used. Years ago when I was putting my 383 together I got help from this board and was told to get a spacer. I used an Edelbrock part and NEVER have had an issue with my 1406 carb. It sits on a 2101 aluminum Edelbrock intake.

Re: Edelbrock 1406 Chevrolet 350

I used the 1", 4 hole phenolic spacer on my trucks. It isolated the heat and the 4 holes kept the velocity of the air charge to the intake up where it should be.

Re: Edelbrock 1406 Chevrolet 350

So finally got this sorted out.. The new OEM fuel pump was putting out 8.5 PSI. I added a fuel regulator and set it to 4.5 and all is well.

I also measured the temp of the carb base and it wasn't getting hot at all.

Re: Edelbrock 1406 Chevrolet 350

Suggestions? Im getting 9psi with a 1406 carb.

What fuel pressure regulator did you install and where? I was thinking about something like this, but don't know where I'd mount it..
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-G3032/?rtype=10

Either that, or would it be better to just buy an Edelbrock 1721 fuel pump that puts out 6psi and skip the regulator all together?

Re: Edelbrock 1406 Chevrolet 350

Most of the Edelbrock carbs like 4.5 to 5.5 PSI.

Mount a regulator anywhere between the pump and the carb. Might have to do some fabricating. There are also mounts available that mount it up close to the carb.
