Re: ticking noise in trans
i'd bet on the tranny dust shield hitting the flexplate should go away after it is worn thru

Re: ticking noise in trans
thanks for the help, forgot to mention the speedo reads 10mph too slow and the odometer reads 400 miles but the truck has about 50 since build,no problem installing speedo cable.

Re: ticking noise in trans
Just a longshot. When I put an automatic transmission in my truck. I used the old flywheel bolts from the manual transmission. They were too long and hitting The edge of the oil pan. This was on 82 Ford 150.

Re: ticking noise in trans
so i just disconnected the speedo cable and the noise is still there when in neutral and spinning the driveshaft.the noise is very faint not loud but going down the road its annoying it is defiantly coming from the rear of trans were speedo cable goes in. is the park pawl spring a big deal to check?

Re: ticking noise in trans
check the speedo. gears.. I'll bet the drive (on tail shaft)and driven( the speedo cable goes into) gears are jumping teeth.. or the end of the driven gear shaft at the speedo cable connection is cracked and the square cable end it opening and closing that crack..
I'll bet on the 1st.. as many don't match the drive and driven gears as many times it'll require the tail shaft housing to be removed.. |

Re: ticking noise in trans
thanks for all the help.no dust shield on there now and bolts not hitting.a friend came over and turned the rear wheels and we have it narrowed down to the speedo gears,[if thats the problem] after we did some snooping on this site i have to come up with the tire size and rear end ratio and oder the correct gears and seals, take off the rear nose cone on the trans. and the housing the cable goes into and replace the gears.

Re: ticking noise in trans
A cracked gear on the out put shaft sounds very plausible.
As the clip might/would hold the peices together on the shaft. If it still did it in neutral did the noise get slower?

Re: ticking noise in trans
i removed the speedo housing that holds the driven gear, looked in the trans.and the drive gear looks fine also the driven gear is fine but it still makes the ticking noise even with the housing/driven gear off.
