front suspension...

im new here to the forum, and i know that this has been talked about a million times but i havnt found anything specifc to my question..

i recently bought a 65 swb fleetside!!!! (wanted this body style scince the early age of 14)

ok heres the deal....... i plan on eventually putting a fair amount of hp in this truck and drum brakes+ speed = getting to know the sand pit at the end of the drag strip...

i have a 85 chevy truck in the yard wasting away... ive read about using the disc brake set up off these trucks as a bolt on swap...

now my question is... can i just un bolt the crossmembers of each truck with all suspension in place and swap them?? i dont mind drilling a couple holes if thats all it takes... id rather do that then pull springs and what not... and id also llike the 85 to be able to roll around the yard instead of sitting on jackstands with no wheals...

thanks!!!

Re: front suspension...

I would just undo the spindle with a jack under the control arm and swap them then once the ball joints are back on remove the jack.

Re: front suspension...

You will find almost anything in these forums if you search. Chances are if you doing it now, someone here has already been down that road.

Whats up w/ the edit feature?

Re: front suspension...

You should be able to. I think someone here w/ a 60 or 61 apache did it. How do you plan on swaping stuff if you dont have the right tools?

Ahh, here it is.

You really should seach.

Re: front suspension...

You dont need a spring compressor. Jack up the front, set it on stands. Put your jack under the lower control arm. Loosen your castle nuts, DO NOT REMOVE, and wack that spindle with a hand sledge...They pop right apart generally. Then remove your castle nut and slowly and carefully lower the jack until you can pop out the spring. It straight forward, but its work, no doubt.
