I just found out that I may have made a better purchase than I had originally thought. A few years ago I bought a black 68 short bed that was in pretty good shape. The truck was originally a 6cyl. three spd., converted to 350 and turbo 400. I got the truck home and did the usual tune ups and got the truck running. The owner told me that his uncle had the truck and did not like the gold paint and the white interior so he had it painted black and put black intierior in it. I did not think any thing of it at the time but recently found out that it has option 551, which makes it a 50th anniversary truck. My question is, Just how rare are these trucks? I am thinking about painting it back the original color and putting the original interior in it. I have found a great deal on a 396 and turbo 400 for the truck and am thinking about swaping it in. Someone give me some thoughts!!! I hope to be able to post some pics in the near future.

I don't think they are rare, but definitely cool! I say go for the big block swap! As you can see in my sig, nothing beats a big block! The interior pieces may be hard to find, unless you already have em. I love the color scheme on the 50ths, so that's another reason you should do it!

they are pretty rare, they only made them 1 year.. very cool trucks though. i had a '68 (sold to n2billet) that was gold and white, looked like a 50th but was not.

Id say they are a little more desirable, but not exactly rare.

If I had one, I would be more tempted to stay original if it came that way, but if the stock block was already altered/swapped, its gloves off.

I`d definately put it back to 50th paint and a 396/400,just because that would be sweet!And,yes,a 396 50th shortbed would be rare if it was original.Also,just like yours,alot have been painted over so that makes "seeing" 50th anniversarys more rare.

I thought all 50th's were LWB's??? Am i mistaken???

LWB trucks were preferred back in the '60's because trucks were used as work vehicles. Paint jobs were not limited to a specific body style. Any of the paints that were offered, were available on short, long, and chassis-cabs, as well as surburbans, and not limited to 2wd.

50th burbs aren't as easy to spot. They look very little like the trucks.
You could get the 50th annv options on any light duty (one ton and less) pick up sold with a bed (step side is probably the exception), el camino or van.
2 wheel drive, 4X4, short, long, longhorn... all of them.
