rear disk brake conversions

I have a 63 chevy stepside longbed

it has a 350 engine and trans from a camaro

and a disk brakes from a 88 chevy 1500

I still have six bolts on the back and the new 5 by 5 bolt pattern in the front

Im trying to match the bolt pattern for the back

So I was thinking of changing the rear end to disk brakes

I don't have a lot of money because my wife is close to divorcing me cause of the truck and the time I spend on it

I use craigslist to find deals on parts

sometimes they fit and sometimes they dont

so my back yard has a lot of extra stuff that didn't fit

My question is...

What is the most inexpensive way to get my rear end to have the same bolt pattern as the front?

Do I have to change the whole rear end?

Or is there a way of just changing the axles that go to the drums

or should I just buy a rear end that has disk brakes on it?

I guess I could just look for six lug disk brakes too?

The thing is that I was amazed on how easy the spindles and rotors fit into where the drums where. I was kinda hoping that It would be just as easy to switch out the rear drums for disks too.

I heard that 72 to 87 spindles fit right in and even though they came from an 88 chevy 1500 it still worked.

I hope someone out there knows what Im trying to say or ask....

Theres some dropped spindles for a 92-98 1/2 ton truck, would they fit my 63?

respectfully,

Carlos

Re: rear disk brake conversions

You can buy 5 lug axles from early classic enterprises. If you have a 12 bolt rearend. Here's the link.http://www.earlyclassic.com/catalog.aspx Click on the choose category and you should see axle replacements there.

Re: rear disk brake conversions

I'm checking into having a machine shop re-drill my 6-lug rear hubs (and drums) for 5x5 - possible cheaper solution?

Re: rear disk brake conversions

Thank you for your replies

Im going to look into the machine shop option first and if not 279 dollars sounds really good as a back up option to solve my head aches

It seems that when trying to save money, you end up spending more in the long run.

Again thanks you for everything.

respectfully,

Carlos

Re: rear disk brake conversions

What exactly is a impala bubble top?

I found a rear end of a 1995 impala for 150

but the guy says it has rear brakes with 4 3/4 bolt pattern

I don't think they made one like that did they?

Respectfully,

Carlos

Re: rear disk brake conversions

Limited slip is a device that locks both axles together, aka posi, that will hold them together until a larger traction forge is exerted up one alxe, breaking the limitation (the limited portion) of the of a preload placed between both axles. I hope this helps!

95 Impala will be 5 on 5 bolt pattern. Should have 3.08 ratio, if it hasn't been changed.

Re: rear disk brake conversions

I picked up the 95 impala rear end today

is there anything special I need to look out for when swaping it out?

I got a power booster and a master cylinder off a 1979 c 10

I plan on getting a proportioning valve from jegs for like 40 bucks

does anyone know if its going to fit right in or if I have to make it narrower or wider?

Thank you guys for all your help.

This is the first time I used this message board.

And Im kicking my self in the butt, cause I should of done this sooner

I guess I was kind of intimidated by all you experts out there.

65 on 24's did you already put this rear end on yours?

Re: rear disk brake conversions

I did this and if I had to do it again I would just by the new ones. I had the axles weld ed in and re drilled then I had to get them turn on a lathe to accept the later 5 lug drum. The center of the axle did not fit on the new drum. It totaled out to about 175 and I still had my OLD axles.

Re: rear disk brake conversions

I donno what kind of math you are doing 65 on 24"s. but for 459.95 the kit, calipers and hoses to complete the job is not bad, and the 6 lug or less then that. All im getting is the kit for 289.95 per pair. As for calipers junk yard, 79-85 Caddi seville, el-dog, or olds. toranado , Buick riviera, front wheel drive cars rear calipers will fit this kit. Autozone may have them at a good price. (shipping to where im at is only 21.55.) You cant beat that with a blender!
