Re: Custom 1987 GMC Crew Cab Short Bed

Funny you should ask... I made a deal with my wife that if I didn't install the cummins in the crew cab by the end of August I was going to sell everything...

I did buy another bed for the truck that is in perfect, and I mean perfect condition...

Re: Custom 1987 GMC Crew Cab Short Bed

I also purchased a 2005 Tahoe interior for the truck. The seats are the fully loaded leather, heated, and full power front buckets. The 2005 Tahoe middle row seat will be used for the back seat that has a drop down center console... I don't have photos of the seats but will take some soon and post...

You have a couple of days to get the engine in it and keep it.

Re: Custom 1987 GMC Crew Cab Short Bed

A little time on the crew cab....

With the pressure building to get the mighty crew cab completed, I finally gave the day to her.

Today I finished removing all the old interior parts in preparation for the new seats (2005 Tahoe front buckets and middle row for the rear seat replacement).

After removing all the original rubber floor mats and jute I quickly discovered how solid this cab is... Needless to say I'm stoked...

I am very interested to see how you mount the front and rear seats. Very glad you're still going at this thing!

Me too, to both statements...

I have a few ideas and will share them as they materialize. One thing is for sure, I cannot use the rear seat frame. My wife sat in the seat and she had about 6" of head clearance.
She told me that, "Oh well this will work".
I responded by telling her that not everyone is only 5 feet tall, and I'd have to lower the seat down a minimum of 3-4 inches.

All in all I'm excited to get back to work on this beast!

Here is a link to the first custom built turbo charged diesel land cruiser my shop has produced, and my main reason for not having time to work on my crew cab:

STAY TUNED!

Re: Custom 1987 GMC Crew Cab Short Bed

This is a little off topic but the roller axles that were under the crew cab: Dana 44 8 lug front, and corp 14 FF rear are going under my 55' GMC..

When I bought the 55' GMC the guy who owned it tried to do a 4X4 conversion and failed miserably.... The front wheels were hitting the trailing edge of the front fenders when bought wheels were facing forward, the engine was installed about 6" to far forward on the frame rails which caused him to cut and twist his radiator core support forward to make clearance for the fan, and lastly there were 12" Sub speaker holes cut in each door panel!

Don't get me wrong, I encourage wannabe fabricators to get in there a get your hands dirty! On the other hand, please do not attempt to fabricate safety related tasks such as chassis, suspension, or drive train alterations! I've got a family and if your lack of ability causes harm to them your a$$ is Grass!

Anyway... Here are a few photos of my repaired front suspension 55' with the dana 44 front axle just installed.... Plans for a cummins and NV4500 are in store for the 55'... Will post build thread after crew cab is built..

Re: Custom 1987 GMC Crew Cab Short Bed

I am planning to use the same seats in my 85 crew cab as well. I had thought about unbolting the seat tracks and brackets from my 07 seats and adapting them to the factory rear bench seat frame. Just a thought, I havent got that far yet though.

Awesome build! Thanks for the entertaining thread. Have you seen the chrome 20" H2 rims? Very cool. There are also several good looking H2 rims in 17". All are 8 lug. I'm not sure of the offset though. Most truck guys run the standard HD truck center caps with their H2 rims.

Re: Custom 1987 GMC Crew Cab Short Bed

Great job! I just discovered your build, and your walk through and explanation to great detail of your short bed conversion has given me a kick to the behind to carry on with some of the projects here at home!

Great job on the Land Cruiser, I grew up with a diesel '82 on the ranch back home, and there were a few occasions where I wished I had a turbo!

As for rims, I'm thinking if you can find just about any beefy 8 lug rim where you can fit on the 2001 and up HD GM center caps that would look pretty cool!!

I'm glad you like the write up so far. This forum has given me a lot of motivation to finish a lot of my projects as well. Everyone on this site seems to maintains a very constructive attitude towards others, and it's for that reason I keep coming back!

I'm building a Toyota Off road enthusiast type of forum site some of you Toyota / GM guys might like to check out, and I hope to maintain similar levels of integrity as this site continues to hold.
