rear fuel tank and tail pipes
So I ordered a Boyd tank to mount under the bed. Currently I have straight tail pipes out the back. The top of the tail pipe is five inches from the bottom of the frame. How much clearance do I need to provide for the tank? Please see attached picture. If I route the tail pipes behind the rear wheels will it change the loudness or dramatically affect performance?
This isn't a thread about whether I should move the tank out of the cab - that's already here on the forum and I know guys are passionate about it either way. That ship has sailed and the tank is on it's way. Rather, I'm just trying to figure what I have to modify to get the tank installed. Doh! Probably should have asked this before buying the tank.

Re: rear fuel tank and tail pipes
I think you will be ok. The tank mounts on the inside of the frame rails. As long as you pipes are out side the inner edge of the frame you should be good.
I have some what of picture of how it mounts maybe it will help.

Re: rear fuel tank and tail pipes
Thanks for the reply, so the heat of the tail pipe isn't a concern? According to google, gasoline ignites at about 500 degrees, pretty sure they're not that hot.

Re: rear fuel tank and tail pipes
Follow up question. What did everyone do with the old gas tank, filler pipe and gas cap? It looks like the filler pipe is part of the gas tank. Did you saw it off and then weld it to the cab, keeping the original look? Maybe add dynamat and carpet where the Gas tank used to be?

Re: rear fuel tank and tail pipes
Ok no one wants to help me, I'll just muddle through, maybe just stick a rag in the hole . . .

Re: rear fuel tank and tail pipes
Patience young grasshopper.
Lots of people fill and weld the hole in. You could cut off the fill tube and leave the cap there to make it look factory. Would just recommend that you weld or epoxy the cap on. I think even someone has welded a bolt on the inside of the cap an bolted in on the inside of the cab. It would not be fun if someone tried to put gas in with out the tank.

Re: rear fuel tank and tail pipes
I cut off the filler neck on mine. Eventually I will patch the hole. I put a pair of 12" subs in the place of the old tank.

Re: rear fuel tank and tail pipes
Also mentioned on a previous thread. french in power radio antenna in the cab hole. If your concerned about exhaust pipe too close to the gas tank add a metal heat shield. Boyd tanks are really nice.

Re: rear fuel tank and tail pipes
That's what we ended up doing, just cut off the filler neck from the tank and it is held in place by the rubber grommet - needs a little adjustment but I'm trying to keep the original look. I'll need to epoxy the gas cap to the filler neck so no one can use it. For now, I'm the only driver so if I forget where the gas tank is, I've got bigger problems. A part of me is sad that a bit of the truck's originality is gone but I don't miss the sloshing and gas fumes when driving with a full tank and the windows open. Thanks everyone for their help.
