A few questions on a power steering gearbox.

Will a 1978 C10 power steering gearbox fit in a 1969 chevy C10 and if not, what modifications would I have to do it to have it fit correctly? Also, would a GM power steering gearbox from 1982-95 work for a 1969 chevy C10? And, would a power steering gearbox from a 1983 chevy pickup (4x4) work with it? I'm asking because the last thing we need is a power steering gearbox for the truck to have power steering and we found a few on craigslist, but we don't wanna buy it and then have it not work for the truck.

Re: A few questions on a power steering gearbox.

According to the LMC catalog it's the same gear up to '76. Not sure what the differences are but it appears there was a change in 77 and again in 80.

Having said that, you can get a new/rebuilt steering gear at O'Reilly for about $120 and I think it would be money well-spent. Needless to say, the steering gear is a very important component. If you are going to the trouble of replacing the gear, why put on a gear that 30-some years old. Chances are it's no better than what you have.

Re: A few questions on a power steering gearbox.

We might have to do that since we can't find one that will work for my truck.

Re: A few questions on a power steering gearbox.

The difference I found was in the hose connectors.I can't say all are alike but later models use a metric connector and early ones an SAE.Gearboxes from 4X4 don't fit 2wd and 68 up has the dimple in the frame so the box bolts right up.Use the pitman arm for the year model front suspension you're using. You can use an early PS pump and a later gearbox but will need custom hoses built. hope this helps some.
