Intro

Hello All. I am new to board, after lurking for a while. I recently bought a survivor 1972 C-10 one owner from Georgia. Truck is all original and has 127000 on motor. I have the maintenance records going all the way back to the first 15000 miles. Truck does not even have a tow hook on it (yet).

I have replaced the dash pad and am replacing the steerwheel this weekend.
I have a power steering kit new in box from GM bought the same year the truck was.

Do you think I will subtract any value from original status if I install Power Steering?

I intend to be true to the original stock of this truck and do not plan on hot rodding it. I even plan on putting the original rims and wheel covers bacck on it when I re-tire...


thoughts?

No. You may not realize any added value, but it will enhance your driving pleasure and allow your arms to relax. Think about parallel parking......

First... to the board from South Florida. And it's nice to see another Florida member. That is a really nice truck you have. Nice Score. As ChevLoRay mentioned, P/S would be a nice option to have. I don't think it would lower the value, especially if it was done as if it were done from the factory. After-all, it was an option. Of course the SPID on the glovebox door would not indicate it but it sounds like your gonna keep it for many years to come so I say go for it and enjoy that Power Steering. Original wheels and tires will only add to this already beauty.

Come on, don't you enjoy a challenge??? I drive a school bus, forty feet long x eight feet wide and I have FUN parallel parking it! I use up a few spaces, but I do it. You can do it, too!

These trucks are not a problem to park, parallel or not. Armstrong steering makes it more difficult, but it ain't no problem.

I have had a CDL for nearly 20 years. I took my original "C" class test in a school bus w/air brake and passenger endorsements.....but I live in a huge city with actual winter. There are people arond here that can't drive when the weather is nice, a little rain or snow and it just falls apart. Literally the people around here just go.......wherever, however, who cares about lines and curbs and barriers? If they want to go somewhere, just turn the wheel that direction and go. It's not as much about distraction as not knowing or not caring...
People seem to "forget" how to drive....it's more like point n shoot.
I was nearly involved in an accident the other night on the way home from work because some #%*@$! didn't "recognize" that everyone else was stopped because the electricity was off and the traffic light was dead. This clown just came barreling through the intersection, already above the speed limit, in a residential neighborhood. As Andy would say.......it was a "flat-spot" situation.

Careful out there Longhair, or you'll be a no-hair, like me. If it were my truck (and it's not) I would probably upgrade the dizzy and the alternator. Other than that, just drive it.

Welcome.....and nice truck!

I kind of find it odd that it didn't come with power steering considering it's a Cheyenne. Of course my 72 SWB Cheyenne was originally ordered with a "3 on the tree" and had AC......go figure.

I would add PS in a heartbeat and I can't imagine that it would hurt value in any way.

I'd say do whatever you want to the truck to make it yours and the most enjoyable to drive......that's what it's all about.

In my mind, the truly collectable trucks of this era that are better left or restored to original condition, are the highly optioned types....like a SWB big block Super Cheyenne with all the available "bells & whistles" of that time. Anything else is fair game to do with what you please and if modifications are done tastefully and skillfully, I don't think you will hurt the value of the truck and may actually enhance it.

It seems that any factory improvements/options added to these trucks reflect positively in convenience and market value. I have seen people pay more $$$ for a little rougher truck with options like PS, PB, Auto than a nicer all manual truck with a 3OTT.

I would swap the power steering onto it without thinking twice. I think it would improve the value, there's lazy ppl like me who would stop looking at it (to buy) once the lack of power steering is noticed.
That, or I would get it home and install it pronto.

Thanks for the comments fellas. I am really pleased with this truck. I took the Valve covers off to peak at the lifters and man was I glad to see clean even lubes with no hotspots.

Felt totally natural walking into Autozone and putting PVC, Fuel Filter, Air Filter, Coolant, Oil and wheel pullers into the basket!

Dude said, "looks like someone has a lot of work ahead for the weekend" I said, Work, no way, this is love man!

As for the power steering, I am surprised at how many of these came without Pwr Steering and Pwr Brakes... I am learning quite a few.

One thing about no power steering, wife won't drive it.. is that so wrong?

I am going to modify it though, since I agree, I wont be selling it and when and if I ever do, it wont subtract any value from a 100% original beauty.
