Greetings all,

Ive got a 69 C-10 longbed I got for free. Its a bare bones truck that needs a total resto. Luckly the body, bed, and frame are in decent shape. It runs well enough to drive around town, but not on the highway. I think it has a 292 with a 3 speed colume shift.

Questions:

1. Is there a 5 speed overdrive that will easily fit?
2. Should I go with a AT instead?
3. I can rebuild the 292 or I have a 350 that I can drop in. Opinions?
4. I have acess to several 73-78 parts trucks, will the PS and PB from one of those fit?
5. Did the 67-72's ever have a dually bed? I've never seen one.

This is my second truck of that era. Back in the mid-80's I had a really nice 72 K-5 Blazer. I was sitting in a DQ having a burger one day when a guy passing through town asked me if I wanted to sell the truck. I let him have it for $2500. That was top $ back then for a used truck with 100K on it. If I only knew then what I know now. That Blazer was fully loaded and in near mint condition.

Thanks for the help, this is a great looking site, I spent several hours last night just reading and learning. I didnt do any work or mods on my Blazer because it was such a nice truck and it didnt need anything. This is only the 4th GM product Ive ever owned, Ive had lots of Mopars and Fords. So, this is new ground for me.

Welcome from Ohio.

Heres my totally useless shot at answering your questions.
1.) This model year did not come with a 5 speed option so 'easy' will only depend on what you can scrounge and your fabrication skills.
2.) This would be an 'easy' install provided you can get your hands on all the pieces.
3.) Go for the 350 if it is a running motor and stick the auto behind it.
4.) Not totally sure?
5.) No, but I have seen some creative renditions of what one might look like.

The power steering will bolt right up. If you get the power steering box and pump you won't even have to worry about whether it is a metric style.

I believe you will be fine swapping over the power brake setup also, though I think a 3/4 ton system will require some mods. The 1/2 should work as is.

Oh, welcome!

1. Like he siad, it all depends on your fab skills. The transmission will bolt up to the engine,b ut you will have to deal with clutch issues, mounting issues, and driveshaft issues. If you can fab, it would be fairly easy. If you can't fab, get a friend that can, or pay someone else to do it.

2. No. I hate autos. There are two kinds of automatic transmissions: The ones that are broken, and the ones that will soon be broken (I know I'll catch a lot of flack from the auto fans out there, but that's how I feel).

3. 350. It sounds like you are looking for mileage, and the six isn't going to give you enough of a mileage difference, in my opinion.

4. I think the PS will, but I think there are mounting issues on the PB.

5. No. There were duallies, but they all were cab & chassis, flatbeds, etc.

Forgot something about 4. The box will fit, but your '69 has a "short" water pump, and your 73+ parts vehicles have "long" water pumps. You'll either have to convert the 69 to long, or find a short power steering pump.

2. don't go auto (personal preference) also based on next answer
3. keep the 292 (first find out if it's a 250 or 292). If the fuel pump is in front of the motor mount it's a 250, behind is a 292. Be different. I love a mean sounding V8 as much as the next guy, but I'm keeping the hot rodded 250 in my truck because it's different. (the mean V8 will be in my Z28). The 292 is more desireable than the 250 for obvious reasons. I think a manual with more ratios than an auto is a big benifit for an inline. I wish I had at least a 4 spd behind my 250.
5. never had a dually bed.

I like the pic of the C-40 pickup, anyone know if that guy has a website?

I prefer a manual in a truck, so I thought the 5 speed would be cool, I had one in my 95 1500 longbed.

I asked about the dually bed because I can get a late 70s 1-Ton, I thought about dropping the 69 cab on it. Im sure custom made 69 Dually fenders would run way more $ than Im willing to spend.

For now Im going to title the 69 and use it for a yard truck.

The dually fenders are just steel step side fenders cut to the contuor of a fleet side bed. I think it looks great and have seen it done a few times. One of the board members just did this using a late model 1 ton chassis. I know he just got married, maybe he will see this thread and respond.

I don't know about that, but I do know that my best friend had a '68 with a 6 and he would try to blow it up without any success. I think that a 6 could go a lot more miles between overhauls.

Ive had lots of sixes, nothing wrong with them. The 300 Ford is one of the most sucessful sixes ever produced, I had 3 of them in F-series trucks over the years.

Hmmm, maybe my family is related to your friend...............We have a stock pile of 250's here at the place and have tried VERY hard to pop one and have yet to accomplish it.

Ferd's 300 is one heck of an engine............I thought about putting one in a '70 K-10 Chassis just to make a few people upset

Welcome to the board! In my opinion, keep the 6, it'll last forever, and besides everybody has an 8, be different!
I've never owned a vehicle with an automatic, manuals are the best

Yeh I've tryed to pop one of those 250's as well with no success.
Drove one over 100 miles with about 1/2 quart of oil ... lifters madea bunch of noise but the motor didn't blow. I was on my way home from maine and figured..what the heck - i might as well keep going I got nothing to loose

if it is a 292 I would keep it and put headers and a 4bbl on it

and yeah those 300 Fturds take a good punishment as well. Probably start knocking but will run like that for a long time
