Door weather strips for 71 Chevy - Success stories

Stayed on, great fit, door closes correctly.

I've looked and really, the most convincing success stories I've seen are one guy who took them off a Honda, and another who spent the entire day gluing the seals on (not sure part mentioned). Anyone have a success story they'd like to share? What parts did you use?

Incidentally, I've bought a ton of NOS, and only two were returned. They were the "LH" and "RH" weatherstrips "3951813-4". Quotes have "special" meaning.

Re: Door weather strips for 71 Chevy - Success stories

Mid to late 90s Dodge Dakota or the smaller trucks. I've read about these many times here. Last year, while on a visit to family, I took some time out to go to a good parts yard that I knew still had some old 67-72s.

Picked a few wiper motors, the ventured over to the dodge area and picked out a good set of door seals. They fit my truck great. I had purchased the famous precision "clip on" from a vendor here, but there was a physics issue in getting those door shut! No amount of adjustment would even get the doors close to shutting with the new ones.

I bought the Precision clip on style. Bummer to hear that they didn't work for you. I have not installed mine yet, but now you have me nervous that I'll have issues getting my doors to close.

Re: Door weather strips for 71 Chevy - Success stories

This is what I used on recommendation from this board

I ordered a brand new set from Hondapartscheap.com
P/N 72315-SVA-A01ZA for the right side.
P/N 72355-SVA-A01ZA for the left side.

works great ,, they are allitle big for the space but the bottom plate at the rocker smooths out where it wants to bunch up , hardest part is getting all the old glue and strip off ,, truck has much less road noise now ,, and they clip on and off easyly for painting and body work

86-96 Dodge Dakota. Plentiful at the junkyards, cheap, fit like a glove, clip on-no glue. Win win win all the way.

out in Ventura CA, no good part yards. Do you happen to have a part number for the Dodge ones so I can get them new?

Re: Door weather strips for 71 Chevy - Success stories

i used a set from a 88-98 chevy full size and these worked well and since they were used they were soft and no door closing issues at all. they were a little long but i cut off about a foot from the bottom and the door seal covers the cut well

Clip on instead of glue huh?......Sounds good. Thanks for the recommendation.

Re: Door weather strips for 71 Chevy - Success stories

I used GMC Paul's clip on (avoid glue!!) VERY high quality, but take forever, I mean forever, to break in/compress. I adjusted the hinges and latches outward to try to compensate without being unsightly, and they STILL are too full to shut the door with the good old solid clunk, have to slam. It's been somewhere between a year and a half and two years. SO, next time for me - will be Dakota wx strips.

Re: Door weather strips for 71 Chevy - Success stories

The honda door weatherstrips require a stout pull ,, not a slamm , they seem to be the perfect thickness

I would like to see what the clips look like on the dodge seal. Anyone have a pic of that?

there are no clips. the weatherstip has a "slit" that pushes over the pinch weld of the door opening.

So what are they talking about when they say the dodge one has clips?

Re: Door weather strips for 71 Chevy - Success stories

It just means that there is metal embedded in the rubber that "clamps" onto the raised crimp seam. No way to actually see them without tearing the seal apart. It really is the best way to go and allows the seals to be re-usable. They're sturdy and don't fall off though.

Not the best pictures, but these are the Dakota weather strips installed. As Jocko described, the "clips" are enclosed within the rubber.

Re: Door weather strips for 71 Chevy - Success stories

Unless I'm mistaken, the Dakota door seals aren't molded like the GM parts for the upper inside corner, correct?

If I'm on the right track, the correct years (Dakota) are 87-96.

I had very good luck with the LMC seals. Took about a month to settle in, now doors close nice and tight. Now, those window channel strips are a different story......

They are not molded but they conform just fine.

Correct. But, as leddzepp said they fit fine. Here are a couple pictures of mine. Inside and outside.
