Speedo, and tach
Ls swapped my 72. 4l80e trans. Is anyone using the stock tach and stock speedo. I am looking at options. Auto meter sells a tach driver and cable x sells the speedo converter. Is anyone using them? Are they worth it? Or is a Dakota Digital the best option for quality? I would like to keep the stock look but no one makes one that looks stock. Dakota makes one with green lines but the clock where the tach should be I done care for. What did you use? Are you happy with it?

Re: Speedo, and tach
I have the Autometer tach driver in my car. It works pretty nice. It is dead nuts on. It plugs in the harness.
I also had a cable -X set-up. It worked really well also. I tried a few GPS set-ups, but they wouldn't keep up with acceleration compared to the Cable-X unit. I would go to 100 mph and back down to 70 and the GPS hadn't hit 100 yet. I have a Dakota Digital in my truck. It is ok. It has neat features, but I still run the column shift and seeing the gas gauge is a PITA. I am not really a fan of the digital readouts also. I would have preferred to have straight analog gauges. The colors are cool though and it does plug right into the OBD port. Last edited by Joyridin; 12-19-2022 at 09:29 AM. |

Re: Speedo, and tach
I used Auto Meter on my 68 LS swap. It kind of looks stock. 5" tach and speedo. 2 1/16" for the oil, water, volt gas gauges. Center gauge is for turn signals, high beam and check engine light.

Re: Speedo, and tach
i used a custom fab. manual old school cable /gear drive on my 460l. there is a guy on ebay that takes your old rear section of the trans housing and adds a gear drive unit to it and sends you a gear to add to your trans and alll is ready for the original cable to hook up. done this twice and no issues at all. not sure if he does any other trans types other then 460E.

Re: Speedo, and tach
He does all the popular transmissions.
If you have the 4l60E with the 6 bolt extension, not the 4 bolts, you will also need this adapter if you want to use the stock speedometer. Because GM changed the way the housing bolts to the extension/transfer-case you will be unable to retrofit to the earlier extension with the correct speedometer adapters.
