trouble with vin decoder 1964 fleetside

Im new here and i like to say thanks for the site and wealth of information. I just picked up a pretty good shape 64 but when i run the vin thru american classics it comes up as a 66 the vin on the title is ddc1446z150211

the vin on the body matches it also except for the dd in the begining

im just trying to figure out what the original drivetrain was and stuff..


Here it is, I know the paint is a little loud but its solid...in and out

Welcome aboard from Kansas City, KS. Nice rig. Per your VIN (C1446Z150211), you have a 1966, Chevy C10, swb fleetside truck, manufactured in Fremont, CA and it was the 50,211th truck off the line. The dd is not part of the VIN. It starts with C for conventional cab. A K would be for 4x4.

The factory engine and driveline will be noted on the build sheet on the backside of the glove box door or in the seat springs behind the back of the drivers side of the seat. The VIN did not identify the engine and driveline equipment.

In 1966, the 327 V8 was available, along with the 283 V8, however the 283 was the only V8 available in the 10/20 series trucks up to and including 1965. There were a few small displacement straight sixes available, as well as the 292 big six.

The tranny options were SM420 (granny low) 4-speed, three speed on the column, 2-speed automatic Powerglide and 3-speed Turbo Hydramatic, both being column shift. Also available in the 4x4, was the SM465 (granny-low) 4-speed, as well as the others.

The factory gear ratio in the C10 series trucks was 3.73:1, in a GM 12-bolt rear-end with six lug hubs. The factory gear ratio in the C20 series trucks was 4.11:1, in a GM 14-bolt Corporate rear-end with eight lug hubs.

This information is available in many of the techinical manuals available, specifically for the '60-'66 Chevy trucks. I suggest getting all of them you can find. They are very informative and helpful in working on and maintaining your truck.

Just for the record, GM didn't introduce the corporate 14 bolt differential until 1973. From about 1954 up thru 1972, probably the most popular 3/4 ton differential was the Eaton 10 bolt which had a drop out 3rd member and a removable rear cover. Every one of these I've had experiences with had 4.57 gears, although 4.11's were available. The second most popular rear differential was the Dana 60, which typically had 4.10 gears.

I was going by memory on the C20 rear-ends and apparently my memory has failed me. I will check my GM literature next time, before passing along information I am not sure about.
